Of the seven score CDs I have I suppose the one I find the most captivating is BALI. There are some favorite and quite gorgeous themes to be found in the other scores, but BALI is the one I tend to play all the way through without programming. As for IL VERO E IL FALSO (someone mentioned this) I was disappointed - found the score to be quite dull and boring. Of course it may work wonders for the film. I wouldn't know. Gaslini's work possess a distinct minimalist quality, it is as if he treats instrumentation as something that should not be relied upon to cosmetically add "false" substance to concepts. He is a fascinating artist. Hi, JB! While we can all agree that there is no surfeit of Giorgio Gaslini albums out there, our tastes in Gaslini music appears to be almost opposite of each other regarding the albums which do exist. I, too, own BALI, but this is a Gaslini CD program which I'm not able to listen to in its entirety. The lack of dramatic contrasts within BALI (which seems to be a travelogue more than anything else) mean that Gaslini's themes wear out their welcome due to the inordinate amount of repeats with little variation to keep me interested. IL VERO E IL FALSO, on the flip-side so to speak, has quite a number of contrasts in a much shorter duration. A neo-classical theme, classical guitar functioning almost as a character, some dramatic stings, and - most fascinating to me - a track featuring adventuresome guitar effects in echo delay lasting over 8 minutes! Perhaps, Mr. Bender, you could describe with a little more detail those aspects of IL VERO E IL FALSO which you find "dull" and "boring". Those words tell how you feel, but they're not the most helpful of words to lets us know 'why'...

Way back when I cant remember but I have seen LA NOTTE DEI DIAVOLO and DEEP RED. The former on video and the latter at the Cinema on a double bill. cant tell you what I thought about the score for the Diavolo. Deep red of course is well known. I miss the fact that back in the 70s TV in UK used to show foreign-made films - especially French thrillers and Italian stuff. Nowadays you get an afganistani film about a shepherd on poncey Film4 once every 4 months and not much else. What we need more than anything is a Sky Movies World - a movies channel that showed films made outside US and UK 24hours a day. That would do me. Somehow I think Rupert missed a trick.

I will not "describe with a little more detail those aspects of IL VERO E IL FALSO which I find dull and boring" because you have succeeded in convincing me that I may very well be wrong about IL VERO E IL FALSO, and I now strongly feel that I need to revisit the CD. Thank you! Give me a tic to listen to the score again and I will post after. And you are of course correct about BALI being repetitive - but hey, cut a guy a break - it's a two CD release of the score! (kidding)
