I listened to it once and I have no desire to ever listen to it again. Varese or Intrada? Could you please elaborate? Thanks. Intrada. The main theme is like nails on a chalkboard to me, and it is repeated ad nauseum. The remaining underscore that isn't the theme sounds like stuff that Barry probably was able to bang out in an afternoon. The Monro song sounds like a bunch of people collecting a paycheck. The musak version of Downtown is atrocious.

I've received this. Most likely, Intrada even didn't do a proper remastering of the album tapes. There are no such credits in the booklet. OK, there ARE some 'liner notes' - sort of.* Mostly, reprints of the LP liner notes (US & European editions). Plus, anonymous notes introducing Intrada's reissue, the briefest thing you can find these days. However, it's Richard Kraft who got to the core of Barry's enigma, in the 1988 Varèse CD reissue: "There is a great irony concerning John Barry. While he is among the most popular and influential filmmusic composers of the last two decades, Barry has never received the proper critical acclaim due an artist of his importance. Despite his Oscars and his successes, the full impact of his music has not been appreciated. [...] Perhaps Barry's greatest power is in the creation of his deceptively simple melodies. [...] Barry has never found it necessary to trip over a mountain of notes to convey emotion. [...] This premiere compact disc release of the score to the rather obscure thriller, "THE QUILLER MEMORANDUM" features a theme that is pure Barry: simple, effective and unforgettable. ----------------- *We must be even more thankful now, that Messrs. Woolston, Leonard & Walker took the time and trouble to author completely new and most detailed notes about "The Quiller Memorandum": http://filmscoremonthly.com/daily/article.cfm/articleID/6851/We-need-to-talk-about-Quiller/ They did it for free. And, Intrada charges full price for their minimal reissue.
