Ever since seeing the film in theatres in 1969 and purchasing the Warners album, I have loved his music for 'The Madwoman of Chaillot'. Both film and score hold up very well.
I'd like to see a re-released and remastered version of his 2 disc orchestral set that he recorded several years ago - it's a fantastic set full of great melodies but, listening recently to my copy, I'm sure a good remastering would only benefit the recording.
I wonder whatever happened to the second film music CD which he said he was recording at the time, because it never appeared?
North Sea Hijack also deserves a commercial release (there are one or two performance flubs but it's still a great score and perhaps the flubs could be corrected with modern technology).
It's a damn shame that Lewis is not scoring films anymore. He had a certain style of music that was instantly recognizable from his 1970s to 1980s classically based themes. I would put him in my top five of British composers from that period.
1. Richard Rodney Bennett 2. James Bernard 3. Barry Gray 4. Michael J. Lewis 5. John Dankforth 6. Angela Morley 7. John Scott (thank you, Yavar for reminding me).
