I bought it recently and have been listening to it a lot. I can't believe what a great score Superman IV is! Actually all 4 are fantastic, but Superman IV is a true buried gem!

Is it profitable for labels to create these big box sets? Would these have sold better as individual CDs?

Does anyone else have it? What did you think?

Not sure about it being a big seller... but, I got it as soon as it was announced several years ago. So well worth it. 10 years of Superman. Superb box set... it may take a chunk of change out of your pocket, but the rewards are fantastic. Obviously a lot of love went in this item and results show. Worth every penny for it and then some.

When Superman Returns came out on dvd, etc... there was a great box set of the 4 Christopher Reeve films + The director cuts for Movie and II + Superman Returns and tons of goodies plus a booklet. Amazing material and a fine companion to the FSM box set.

I too am so happy Alexander Courage's IV is in the box. I really think it is one of the best adaptations of John Williams work ever. I play it more than the others (which of course are wonderful in their own right)...

Funny... I just watched the box set a little while ago... breaking out this starting tomorrow and letting it play through. One of the finest box sets ever made. Thanks FSM.

The first pressing of 3000 units sold out, so Lukas proceeded with a second pressing. I think that qualifies as a big seller considering the $120 price tag.

I bought one of the second pressing units solely for Williams' score for the first film. I still have not listened to any of the other scores. I may some day if the spirit moves me.

Yes, it sold very well. I think this material was particularly well suited for a box set because Superman: The Movie had already been out before, and the sequels are all kind of variations thereupon, but put all together it really made an essential collection. And I really like the Ron Jones cartoon music! That was all I really handled, Mike Matessino did everything else.

This was my first FSM purchase just when I was getting into this hobby. I was on the fence about it given my financial/job situation at the time but when I saw the beautiful packaging shot over at CapedWonder.com, I knew I had to buy it. I believe my friend said, "Scott, face it - it was the packaging that won you over!" He was half-right... the music helped, too. smile

I jumped on this set as SOON as it went up. It is perhaps my top 5 of holy grails. This started as a hint on the SupermanHomepage and it was one of those things that I was so excited I couldnt think straight. I literally got up early because I knew FSM was 3 hours ahead and I would over sleep through it and yeah...what an experience! After a long morning at work (I worked overnight back then) I came home at 7am, took a nap, and when I got up to take the trash out I found the box on the step! I couldnt believe it!!

Sometimes I just pinch my self when I look at this box in my collection. It was a fantasy box set that I fancied of ever having. And Lukas made it real. Thank You againbig grin

Yes...again, thank you Lukas for making it happen. This has to be the best soundtrack box set ever. Just a gorgeous piece of work

I think this is one of the nicest and best box sets I know, along with the Elmer Bernstein Music Collection, these two are my favorite box sets ever. Well worth the asking price if you ask my humble opinion and I just pray this paid a few FSM employees cell phone bill for a few months.

Below my front cover from the 1st pressing signed by Williams, Jones, Thorne, Kidder and Bricusse

I'm not a huge autograph guy, but man is that great! Did you get that signed by all of them in person, or have you been mailing around your Blue Box?

This set is without question one of the greatest releases of all-time. Packaging and music are top notch. This might be most treasured box set (next to Friday the 13th).

This is definitely one of the most satisfying cases of having rather than wanting.

I wanted (hopefully from some label some day):

  • A remaster of the score for the original.

  • Expanded editions of the Ken Thorne scores.

  • A release, any release, of Superman IV.

    What I got was:

  • A remaster of the score for the original along with unheard alternate takes and edits that makes it sparkle and shine like never before.

  • Complete editions of the Ken Thorne scores in such good sound that it forced me to re-evaluate his contributions.

  • A complete edition of Superman IV that features a ton of amazing music that I wasn't even aware existed.

  • An entire disc of Ron Jones music that I wasn't familiar with but turned out to be awesome.

  • Comprehensive documentation to put everything into context.

...all in one, convenient Blue Box.

Having, as you can see, ended up being much better than wanting.

This was the only one of the FSM boxes I bought as soon as released. I must admit not had chance to play it through much and never really sat down and listened to the Ron Jones stuff but the Superman IV discs were worth their weight in gold.

I really thought that the next FSM box after this was going to be Treks 1 - 6 - how wrong I was!

I love this set! I think I was most excited to hear the Ken Thorne scores. I'd heard the music from the movie more times than I could count & the Courage score is brilliant but didn't have the nostalgia factor for me because of how wretched the actual film was. I don't know if I've ever watched it in it's entirety. Superman II & III were huge parts of my youth. I recorded music from the 1st three movies on cassette when they aired on TV. To hear the Thorne music presented in the quality they are on these discs was an absolute treat!

I have the original cd of Superman: the Movie & the Rhino 2 cd set & the box set sounds much richer to me. Just an amazing box set.

My favorite score of all time is Superman The Motion Picture. I have listened to the clips available from the other scores and just can't bring myself to buy this just for the score to the first movie. I own the Rhino release from 2000. Is the sound quality that much better on this release? Maybe now this can be done on a smaller scale with the scores to the Christopher Nolan Batman Trilogy! I would love to have this music in it's entirety. I think one pressing of 3,000 units would sell at $69.99. I know I would buy it!

I'll probably be sent to the phantom zone for saying this, and I truly appreciate all the work that went into The Blue Box, but I think Superman The Motion Picture could still do with a better release. As I understand it the Blue Box version was taken from digital transfers made way back in 2000... A fresh pass of the master tapes made with modern ADCs on a top notch reel to reel could still milk more out of the masters (witness the recent Jaws releases for example). I think Superman alone (the other three sound utterly perfect to my ears) deserves one last go, though I realise I'm probably in the minority on this one.

    Runs for cover! wink

Eh, maybe , maybe not. I'm not an audiophile. but for me, it is hard to imagine it sounding any better. It is still a stunning release, the entire box. Intrada's Jaws improved on the awful Decca album, but the Blue Box sounds pretty f*cking great, so CAN any more goodness be milked from it ?

Were FSM releases ever eligible for Grammy awards? They do - or did - honor reissues, and this baby is still a work of art as far as I'm concerned.

Are you sure you're not talking about the Rhino edition, which came out in 2000 and indeed sounds like garbage. The FSM one sounds way better.
