Well, we all probably know by now how reliable source IMDB is, but this seems quite interesting if it turns out to be true... Dario Marianelli should be scoring new movie directed by Dustin Hoffman: QUARTET about the group of retired opera singers living in a home for elderly staging regular concert on anniversary of Antonio Vivaldi's birthday.
Seems like a cute little comedy featuring some GREAT actors (not Hoffman who is staying behind the camera only) including Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon or Billy Connolly.
The movie should open in November to qualify for this year's award season and you can watch the trailer below:
I'll keep an ear open for cd samples, i like Marianelli's work a lot, I just wish he would do more fantasy type stuff like V for Vendetta. The film does not look like my thing at first glance (the video is blocked in my location) as I generally cannot stand performances or ceremonies of any kind in movies, where the rhythym of the movie stops, and is replaced by that of the song or speech or sermon or whatever it might be. In that sense, this looks like it could be tough going.
I had no idea Hoffmann directed. Being too lazy to check out imdb right now, is this his first directorial effort?
from IMDB (Straight Time, 1978): "Originally, Dustin Hoffman was directing the film. But he changed his mind after a few days of filming and hired Ulu Grosbard."
Maybe that was the reson he decided to direct Quartet only and not star in it as well. He hasn't directed anything in between.
