SILVA SCREEN RECORDS PRESENTS
50TH ANNIVERSARY WORLD PREMIERE RELEASE
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA

A Special 50th Anniversary Release of the Complete Newly - recorded Oscar-winning score from the DAVID LEAN classic with music by MAURICE JARRE

Widely considered one of the most influential films in film history this album features, for the first time, the complete 77-Minute Score performed by the acclaimed and award-winning City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Nic Raine. The album was recorded from the original 1962 orchestrations by Gerard Schurmann.

Though a virtual unknown in Hollywood at the time, Maurice Jarre would soon earn the first of his 3 Oscars for his majestic and ground-breaking score for Lawrence of Arabia. As described by film historian and author Frank K. DeWald in the booklet of the recording:

“His [Jarre’s] rich thematic material for LAWRENCE included both “Western” and “Eastern” melodic ideas, and his sweeping theme for the desert proved highly memorable (exceeded only by “Lara’s Theme” from DR. ZHIVAGO a few years later). His handling of those ideas was dramatically apt, and he proved fully up to the challenge of the many moments in the film when music alone (or, rather, music in partnership with the breathtaking cinematography) needed to carry the full emotional weight of a scene.”

Isn't this just a repackaging of the Tadlow rerecording?

I think that's a pretty big 'duh' there.

Nothing wrong with that, especially in this case where disc 2 was unrelated anyway (except the one track). Not that I'd want to be without said disc, granted...

I think it is. with some tracks merged down. So the same content is here. The Tadlow was a 2cd set with other suites and a few bonus cues culled on cd 2. James did mention that he wanted to issue a 5.1 surround mix and I gladly re-purchase that if it was done.

It looks like the Tadlow release, the only difference being that they've joined several tracks together so there are now 20 tracks instead of 26 tracks, but the musical content and the running time is the same.

So why is it called "World Premier Release"?

Unless this refers to the fact that it's been re-edited (slightly).

As the Tadlow 2 CD release was only ever released on MAIL ORDER and through SPECIALIST OUTLETS...I licenced the single score to Silva Screen in the hope that it might find an additional market in North America outside of Screen Archives, Intrada etc....

So this release is not for the "fans" who hopefully already bought the 2CD set ... but it is for Joe Public. (I've got to try and get some money back somehow as it was a very costly recording)

It is in fact one of the best recordings you've ever done (personally I think it's perfect) I just wondered why some of the tracks are merged on this release as opposed to the original 2cd release.

I really like disc 2. There is some good stuff on it (see below). Makes it a better purchase imo. It's available through Amazon as well. This and Villa Rides from Tadlow are favourites of mine.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful but why can't we just have the original film score. We really don't need yet another re-recording do we? Pass.

Definitely, I had forgotten that it was somewhat limited through the mail-order release.
A great score and a great recording! I haven't touched the CD with the original recording since.

To the best of my knowledge you can't have the complete original score. It's not available. Thrown out many years ago. There will be a new cd release of selections of the original soundtrack album as part of the Blu-ray box set to be released this fall.

If you want the complete score this recording which is now a few years old is pretty good.

Actually this re-recording is less than TWO years old and is remarkably (completely) faithful to the Original Soundtrack. It's one of the best re-recordings ever, it's wonderful to see it getting a wider release.

What on Earth are you complaining about? It's not "yet another re-recording," it's the (far superior) re-recording from a couple of years ago, reissued, so that

A) people who don't yet own it can enjoy it, and…

B) the person who produced it might actually stand a chance of making back his money.

Also, there is nothing "just" about having the original film score. By many accounts, it no longer exists. If it does, somewhere, the costs of unearthing and restoring it, plus getting the license to release it, could be astronomical.

What exactly is the problem here?

Honestly, this re-recording is so good that it makes the OST nothing more than a historical artefact. Its got stunning sound, fantastic playing, thorough liners and it's amazingly faithful to the film. It's easily Tadlow's finest re-recording in my opinion and one of the strongest re-recordings ever made. If you're at all a fan of Jarre or this score, you owe it to yourself to snag a copy.

Interestingly, the Blu-ray release is said to include a soundtrack sampler. The word sampler to my mind, implies that there's a full(er) cd that one could purchase. I originally thought some company was going to do another re-release of the old OST with the sampler being some of the tracks from that. Now that this announcement's come out, I wonder if Silva's releasing some of the tracks from this recording as the sampler.

Chris.
