Really been loving the scores this season.
Johnny Klimek has really brought a great sensibility and sense of pathos to the season.

BTW, I don't like the second season version of NEWSROOM theme. It's definitely inferior to the original. Why try to fix something that's not broken?
Clearly, HBO wanted something less mellow, more energetic and promising tension. The first season did not have the impact they'd hoped, and they were all over this season, to the point that they jettisoned much of the first four episodes already shot for it, at great expense.
That said, I agree, the first season version was superior in my opinion.
Oh, boy - they did? I liked the first season very much (a bit too soapy at times, but still great dialogue).
I definitely would be interested in a score release.

That said, I agree, the first season version was superior in my opinion.
I liked it better as well. If the first season did not have the impact HBO had hoped for, it may have been that the dippy romance subplots detracted from the riveting newsroom segments, the interplay between staff and management, and the stellar performances (Waterston and Fonda not the least of that). The ensemble cast is one of the best ever, IMO. The souped-up new theme communicates nothing at all to me, whereas the original theme told me that something serious and worth paying attention to was about to take place -- which by and large was what happened. Too bad for that (the new theme, that is). The show is still pretty great, though.

I'm excited for this news, because I thought the scores in the last season were the best since perhaps Newman's pilot score! There were numerous parts where an extended cue would stand front-and-center in season 3, and also some really great song use (particularly 'Shenandoah" at the end of the episode of the same title).
Somewhat strangely, each season of the show has had a different composer. Season 1 was Alex Wurman (March of the Penguins), Season 2 was Johnny Klimek (Perfume: Story of a Murderer), and Season 3 was HBO veteran Jeff Beal (who also did Monk and some film work like Pollock).
I think the last season of the show was particularly strong even if it did feel abbreviated/rushed at only 6 episodes. Season 1 while overall my favorite also had an episode or two in the middle which I found really annoying, and Season 2 was more consistent but had some annoying plot threads in it. In terms of music Johnny Klimek was also my least favorite, though his work was certainly serviceable. I hope Varese's CD focuses most on cues by Newman, Wurman, and Beal.
I also may have something against Klimek because I think he was responsible for the rejiggering of Thomas Newman's really superb theme, and sadly season 3 kept the new season 2 opening which I felt was both visually and musically a big dumbing-down ('splosions!) of the wonderful original opening titles.

Didn't mean to. Unfortunately I haven't seen the show and didn't know he worked on it, though I'm hoping to rectify that sometime this year. I love Kevin Spacey.

Enterprise opening with the song evokes feelings of disgust in me. Newsroom opening (season 1) is on the other hand brilliant and inspiring.
