"Criminal" and "What Doesn't Kill You" are both terrific scores by Alex Wurman.

Sadly...no release for What Doesn't Kill You.

Finally caught up with the second season; new variation on the opening theme!

Still enjoying this show on so many levels.

The original opening reminds me of something... Oh yes, Enterprise.

Really been loving the scores this season.

Johnny Klimek has really brought a great sensibility and sense of pathos to the season.

Didn't know he was brought on board for this season, love his film scores with Reinhold Heil of course. I hope a release will happen at some point!

ENTERPRISE?????????
You must not be referring to STAR TREK:ENTERPRISE. I don't see any relation between that god-awful vocal (the worst Star Trek music in the history of the franchise) and the lovely instrumental opening of THE NEWSROOM. You must be referring to another ENTERPRISE. (unless you are referring to the visuals...in which case yes, the first 3 seconds of both shows feature a shot of Earth from space..otherwise, completely different.)

BTW, I don't like the second season version of NEWSROOM theme. It's definitely inferior to the original. Why try to fix something that's not broken?
I wish the scores were up to the quality of the theme anyway. Nothing has made an impression on me so far.

Clearly, HBO wanted something less mellow, more energetic and promising tension. The first season did not have the impact they'd hoped, and they were all over this season, to the point that they jettisoned much of the first four episodes already shot for it, at great expense.

That said, I agree, the first season version was superior in my opinion.

Oh, boy - they did? I liked the first season very much (a bit too soapy at times, but still great dialogue).

I definitely would be interested in a score release.

I liked it better as well. If the first season did not have the impact HBO had hoped for, it may have been that the dippy romance subplots detracted from the riveting newsroom segments, the interplay between staff and management, and the stellar performances (Waterston and Fonda not the least of that). The ensemble cast is one of the best ever, IMO. The souped-up new theme communicates nothing at all to me, whereas the original theme told me that something serious and worth paying attention to was about to take place -- which by and large was what happened. Too bad for that (the new theme, that is). The show is still pretty great, though.

Looks like Varese Sarabande is issuing a CD of music from the show on Feb. 17, 2015.

Excellent news! Thanks for the heads up.

I'm excited for this news, because I thought the scores in the last season were the best since perhaps Newman's pilot score! There were numerous parts where an extended cue would stand front-and-center in season 3, and also some really great song use (particularly 'Shenandoah" at the end of the episode of the same title).

Somewhat strangely, each season of the show has had a different composer. Season 1 was Alex Wurman (March of the Penguins), Season 2 was Johnny Klimek (Perfume: Story of a Murderer), and Season 3 was HBO veteran Jeff Beal (who also did Monk and some film work like Pollock).

I think the last season of the show was particularly strong even if it did feel abbreviated/rushed at only 6 episodes. Season 1 while overall my favorite also had an episode or two in the middle which I found really annoying, and Season 2 was more consistent but had some annoying plot threads in it. In terms of music Johnny Klimek was also my least favorite, though his work was certainly serviceable. I hope Varese's CD focuses most on cues by Newman, Wurman, and Beal.

I also may have something against Klimek because I think he was responsible for the rejiggering of Thomas Newman's really superb theme, and sadly season 3 kept the new season 2 opening which I felt was both visually and musically a big dumbing-down ('splosions!) of the wonderful original opening titles.

You are leaving out House Of Cards, which is a shame.

Didn't mean to. Unfortunately I haven't seen the show and didn't know he worked on it, though I'm hoping to rectify that sometime this year. I love Kevin Spacey.

If that is true, you really need to get on that, man....

Whatever else this CD has, I hope it includes both versions of the main title theme - even expanded versions, if such things exist. Looking forward to ordering it.

Ha, didn't see your response until right now- sorry. Yes, Star Trek Enterprise. The whole editing style, faded washed out pictures slowly cross-fadding and even the music evokes the same feelings without the vocals.

Enterprise opening with the song evokes feelings of disgust in me. Newsroom opening (season 1) is on the other hand brilliant and inspiring.

I feel the same way. That Enterprise opening in combination with it being a TOS prequel were the main reasons why I didn't watch the show till much later.

LOL! Over the song itself or what? I mean I don't like the song, and miss an orchestral main theme, but I hardly feel disgust!
