I just received my Movies Unlimited catalog and noticed on the entry for they were advertising the new Fox Cinema Archives. They listed such obscure titles as "Always Goodbye", "Chicken Every Sunday", "They Came To Blow Up America". Does anybody know if 20th Century-Fox is going to use the Cinema Archives series for any of their television series (e.g., "The Felony Squad", "12 o'C
Clock High"' "Donie Gillis").

I can't believe that Fox is releasing all these great widescreen movies cropped --- titles like THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE, THE BIG SHOW, A HATFUL OF RAIN , SING ,BOY, SING, MADISON AVENUE, THE VISIT, THE WIZARD OF BAGDAD, THE DAY THE FISH CAME OUT, and FRAULEIN --- whats the point? Some have been shown on FMC widescreen but most havent . What a wasted opportunity.

I also hear the quality of these dvdr is subpar, especially compared to the exemplary work done by Warner Archive as well as the othe m.o.d. labels like MGM and Columbia. Sad, I would love many of these Fox films.

Exemplary? How is one batch of DVD-R movies any more "exemplary"
than another batch? The fact that all the studios are releasing their
back-catalog titles on DVD-R, instead of pressed DVDS makes them
completely unacceptable by some collectors. Nearly every movie
the Warner Archive has released can be easily recorded from TCM.
All they do is make a wrap-around cover sleeve for the dvd case.
Anyone can do that.

That's ridiculous. Widescreen movies should be released in their correct OAR, and movies & TV shows should be released in the way they were originally shown, without the image being cropped.

No.

Movies and TV shows should be released in the way they were originally COMPOSED
by the Director of Photography......

There IS a difference.

Because they are taking care and time to find the best elements and restore and remaster many titles - many not available on TCM. Many of their releases would never be released on "pressed" dvds ever anyway ...and not everyone has access to broadcast versions which as far as I can tell do not match the quality of many of the WA releases.

I beg to differ. Yes, many of the Warner Archive films were remastered....in the 90's.
They are not NEWLY remastered (as in recently). Basically, all they do is give the
video master a one-pass color correction. Granted, I haven't purchased
thousands or even hundreds of these discs, but the few I have look no better
than the TCM recordings I've made. THE LAST RUN, THE CAREY TREATMENT and
THE NIGHT DIGGER broadcasts on TCM look every bit as good as the Archive releases.
Unless the TCM logo that pops up in the lower right corner of the screen
once every half-hour (for 10 seconds) really bothers you that much...

According to the information I have received from and read about WA , the advertised remastered discs are newly done( yes,I know they are a single pass correction)and not done 20 years old. When exactly was there a remastered version of THE NIGHT DIGGER(which I own) released in the 90s on video or laserdisc in widescreen? This was almost a lost film until WA (and TCM?) brought it back into circulation.

I dont quite understand your dismissal of what they are doing. They do take care with these releases - they have even redone some films when they were not happy with the original release , such as I LOVE MELVIN which remastered looks amazing. I cannot afford TCM(which costs about $70 a month from comcast) or at least dont believe it is worth that much for that one channel. I wish I had HD TCM but our cable and sateillite packages really overcharge for those of us who love old movies aka TCM.

I am very happy with the quality of WA's dvds - I own many and have had only one problem with a single disc . I am often impressed with the picture and sound quality, too. And if there is ever a problem with a disc you receive (as far as playability) , you only need to call customer service and a replacement is sent free of charge.

I got some great sword-and-sandal epics from Warner Archive, all of which had been restored and presented in letterbox. You hardly ever see that with this kind of B-movie....

(Sword-and-sandal films are a guilty pleasure of mine; must be because they were all over the place when I was between 10 and 15. Great escapist pablum. Or should I say "peplum?")

But Warners has done a great job with them: clear prints, widescreen. They actually look better than they did when I saw them at the Sewickley Theatre....

And, I may add, TCM hardly ever shows sword-and-sandal films. Once, they scheduled 4 or 5 in a row, very early one morning. I was all set to record them, only to learn they'd all been cancelled at the last minute!

Oh well.

TCM does that every now and then, cancels screenings, for any number of reasons. (Most often, it's because some former star has died, at which point TCM will forego their regular programming, for a tribute to the star's career.)

But, that wasn't the case with these cancelled peplums; they were pre-empted for no announced reason...

I just found out Fox Cinema Archive released the Gordon Douglas western, Fiend Who Walked The West in a 1.33:1 OAR, when it's supposed to be 2.35:1.

How annoying. frown

Because I read good reviews for it, I did buy MY GAL SAL a week ago off Amazon(where many of these are selling for $11.50). Of course it is not a widescreen movie -- most of the releases are full frame whether or not the film was released in widescreen or not.

Another Fox film I'd seen years ago is 23 Paces To Baker Street. Another Cinemascope film FCA released in P&S. Not gonna give them good money for this kind of crap. Warner Archive puts these guys to shame.

I tried to find a customer service e-mail to send a complaint.

I finally found a customer service e-mail for Fox Cinema Archives (foxdigitalcopy@4icc.com) and sent them a message, getting this very lame response;

"Dear Greg,
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is committed to bringing classic films
from the studio’s vault into the homes of film aficionados and collectors with
its Fox Cinema Archives collection. We aim to provide the best home
entertainment experience possible for titles released under the Fox Cinema
Archives banner, but are often limited to the film’s available source material.

Thank you,
Fox Digital Copy Support"

Here's my response to that e-mail:

Hi there,

I have been keeping abreast of new reviews of Fox Cinema Archive titles, and the explanation, "but are often limited to the film’s available source material," is not an acceptable response.

I find it hard to believe all the Fox Cinemascope (2.35:1 of 1.85:1) titles you've released in cropped pan and scan are the only versions you have in the vault. I was looking forward to titles like Fiend Who Walked The West, and 23 Paces To Baker Street in their original aspect ratio. As I understand it, Fox Cinema Archive has not yet released a Cinemascope title in it's original OAR.

Fox Cinema Archives released the Henry Fonda western Warlock in Pan & Scan, but was previously released in anamorphic widescreen..by Fox. I'm sure glad I bought that when I did.

Warner Archive has raised the bar for issuing older titles in a made-on-demand program, and you guys need to step up your game as I sure can't support your sub-standard product.
