A surprise choice for this new, big-budget remake of the classic tale.
The director has used Patrick Doyle a few times in the past, but he may have been too busy scoring A-list, big budget blockbusters these days!
I have a few CD's by Hartley and they're pretty decent.
Good to see him getting a crack at a high profile release....innit smile

This is really good news...

I have several of Richard Hartley's scores... most of them coming from his very productive days with Hallmark and several of their bigger budgeted tv movies/mini-series. I have yet to pick up his score for the remake of Lion in Winter, but the samples sound quite good.

Of course, the biggest guilty pleasure... Sheena... corny, goofy movie with a beautiful main theme and fine score (at least I though so)...

Thanks for sharing.

Looking forward to this, the 1998 movie with that perfect Doyle "Kissing In The Rain" scene really got me interested in film music and it's power. I think it was the first score I ever bought with Barry's The Specialist.

Never heard anything by Hartley except Flashbacks of a Fool which has very little score released.

I wonder why no Patrick Doyle? He doesn't seem to have anything lined up for 2013.

The film was premiered a couple of months ago. Maybe Doyle was working on Brave and he couldn't do it.

As Patrick has already scored a previous version he wasn't interested.

And an excellent score, very different from his usual yet very beautiful. "Kissing in the Rain" remains one of my favorite cues in his repertoire.

I haven't listened to it all yet, but this score sounds more like Thomas Newman from the 90's than anything else.
Hartley has aped T Newman before, in his A THOUSAND ACRES score, but this is even closer to TN's style than anything before.
Even the darker, atmospheric moments are in the TN vein.
The rest is quite modern sounding, with elements of R/C scores thrown in.
I'm not sure what they're doing, or how well they work, in a period epic like this as I haven't seen the film as yet, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting.
Doyle's effort is more traditional and romantic, even though his version was for a more contemporary telling of the tale.
Hartley previously worked with the director on AN AWFULLY BIG ADVENTURE.

The CD runs 50 minutes and has no recording info whatsoever, apart from PERFORMED BY RICHARD HARTLEY & THE PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA

He's been onbaord "Effie" for many months now.

I've never seen that film and noticed the CD has 3 or 4 tracks by Hartley. Do you know how much score in minutes they total?
Cheers.

Not to mention that he is still in negotiations for Thor 2, most likely is doing Apes 2 and you can bet he will be on board of upcoming Jack Ryan movie Kenneth Branagh is currently shooting.

Absolutely!

2 non-soundtrack releases from Patrick will also see the light of day early next year.

1 of which is called 'American Inspirations', featuring various new works inspired by America (clearly!)

Back on topic, Richard Hartley is a terrific composer and his updated website with lots of content is here:

It has about 12 minutes of score. But I wouldn't have bought it if this this track wasn't included:

Beautiful scene with an incredible 'If There Is Something' in the background.

Uncofirmed, but Elliot goldenthal's wikipedia page says he's doing Thor 2, using Doyle's themes. Apes sequel is 2014.

If I'm honest, my first listen of this was disappointing.
Lacking a memorable main theme, too reliant on that Thomas Newman sound and also very modern sounding for a period tale.
A few more plays have helped some tracks stand out a bit better, mainly those moments that recall scores like LITTLE WOMEN and OSCAR & LUCINDA.
Maybe seeing the film will help the music hold up some more?

Somehow forgot about this one entirely, despite having posted in the thread! Listening to samples now.
