A surprise choice for this new, big-budget remake of the classic tale. The director has used Patrick Doyle a few times in the past, but he may have been too busy scoring A-list, big budget blockbusters these days! I have a few CD's by Hartley and they're pretty decent. Good to see him getting a crack at a high profile release....innit

I haven't listened to it all yet, but this score sounds more like Thomas Newman from the 90's than anything else. Hartley has aped T Newman before, in his A THOUSAND ACRES score, but this is even closer to TN's style than anything before. Even the darker, atmospheric moments are in the TN vein. The rest is quite modern sounding, with elements of R/C scores thrown in. I'm not sure what they're doing, or how well they work, in a period epic like this as I haven't seen the film as yet, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting. Doyle's effort is more traditional and romantic, even though his version was for a more contemporary telling of the tale. Hartley previously worked with the director on AN AWFULLY BIG ADVENTURE. The CD runs 50 minutes and has no recording info whatsoever, apart from PERFORMED BY RICHARD HARTLEY & THE PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA

I wonder why no Patrick Doyle? He doesn't seem to have anything lined up for 2013. He's been onbaord "Effie" for many months now.

>>>>>>>Never heard anything by Hartley except Flashbacks of a Fool which has very little score released.>>>>>>>> I've never seen that film and noticed the CD has 3 or 4 tracks by Hartley. Do you know how much score in minutes they total? Cheers.

Not to mention that he is still in negotiations for Thor 2, most likely is doing Apes 2 and you can bet he will be on board of upcoming Jack Ryan movie Kenneth Branagh is currently shooting. Uncofirmed, but Elliot goldenthal's wikipedia page says he's doing Thor 2, using Doyle's themes. Apes sequel is 2014.

If I'm honest, my first listen of this was disappointing. Lacking a memorable main theme, too reliant on that Thomas Newman sound and also very modern sounding for a period tale. A few more plays have helped some tracks stand out a bit better, mainly those moments that recall scores like LITTLE WOMEN and OSCAR & LUCINDA. Maybe seeing the film will help the music hold up some more?
