He is to me anyway. I saw RAIDERS, my all time favorite movie, on IMAX the other day and his music inspired me! It just doesn't get any better. My goal is to have every single John Williams cd. I'm off to a great start with 60. I saw him in concert back in 1995, it was the best concert I've ever been to, I hope he comes back. The man has won 5 Oscars, and is I think the most Oscar nominated living person, wow! I look forward to his LINCOLN.

Yyyyyyip.

So far Raiders iMAX is not playing anywhere in my city. Bummer. I so want to see it again in a theater.

He is certainly great, but for me Jerry Goldsmith and Alfred Newman come first. It's funny, my top two favorites are scores not found on my post people's lists: THE TOWERING INFERNO and FAMILY PLOT.

It's a subjective topic not worth comment, but Henry I thought Conti was your favourite/best?

Williams is not even in my top 20.

From an obsessed-with-the-early-to-mid-1970s point-of-view, I find The Eiger Sanction to be absolutely glorious. And Johnny does Americana better than almost anybody.

My top three favorite composers are: Williams and Conti tied for first with Goldsmith far behind. I love Goldsmith too, but I find many of his scores kind of boring, like PLANET OF THE APES, OUTLAND and TORA TORA TORA. They're good in the movies, but I don't think make a good stand alone listening experience. Also, Goldsmith doesn't have near as many instantly recognizable scores as Williams. Maybe the reason Goldsmith doesn't impress me as much is because everyone on this board say he's so good. I agree he's very good, but to me he's not near as good as people say.

I'm just giving my opinion. Does Goldsmith have to be everyones favorite?

Easy now Henry. I think my message was clearly meant in jest.

Henry - you're a wiser man than many people give you credit for.

I've said it before, and while he has some stiff competition (Copland, Ives, Reich, Gershwin, Ellington) John Williams might be the USA's greatest ever composer.

Yes, He does. I admit that Williams is a fine film composer(His concert works stink), but all his music apart from the film bores me to tears. To call him the greatest American composer ever is so ludicrious it is laughable.

Honestly for myself, there is only a handful of Williams scores that I like. Most people say Williams score for Star Wars (ANH) is what got them into film scores in the first place.

I was born in 1981 so ya I watched the theatrical versions of the Original Trilogy on VHS but that is not what got me into film scores.

In fact it was Jerry Goldsmith's score for Star Trek The Motion Picture is what got me into film score music. Back then I did like Star Trek The Motion Picture, still do on occasion.

We all have preferences but my top pick always goes to Jerry Goldsmith.

A stunning and closely-argued case to which there is no possible retort.

Utterly agree! smile

I doubt I'll ever get to see the man for real, unless he does a UK concert, butnot a day passes without one of his pieces of music passing through my transom!

We all have our favourite composers and as Jeff Bond said in the "Is Star Trek the best TV music ever" thread, the trouble with a set-up like this is it invites people to tell you all the reasons they don't like what you like.

My favourite composers are Barry with Goldsmith and Herrmann — Williams is popular with me too, just not at the top of my totem pole. However, that is a statement of my preferences and musical taste rather than a review of achievement. In terms of achievement, I do think Williams has the most credentials to claim the title of greatest ever.

Cheers

One of the best, certainly.
The best? That's debatable.
