"If anyone ever put out an expanded soundtrack, with all the Sondheim songs, as well as the Elfman, the result would do crossover business with the theatre crowd, particularly all the Sondheim fanatics, of whom there are many."

Yes it would. I know many Sondheim fans and they drool every time I mention an expanded DICK TRACY CD. This is why I am surprised Disney or Intrada are not seriously looking into this. IMO, the timing is perfect.

I bet with Sondheim and, especially, Madonna involved, there would be a lot of extra red tape involved (and a release may even be cost prohibitive)

I'd get an expanded soundtrack just to hear Danny Elfman's Wagner parody, "Die Schlumpff".

I'd like an expanded 'Tracy' CD too. The first release is pretty short, and it seems like there's a bunch of potential buyers out there. Lots of rights to negotiate if you get extra Elfman music, the rest of the Madonna songs, *and* anything Silvestri may have done. But if it happened, it seems like you'd attract:

* Disney fans
* Soundtrack fans
* Madonna fans
* Elfman fans
* Fans of the movie itself
* Sondheim fans

I get that film didn't stick with a lot of people, and that it was considered a box-office disappointment. But that's still a LOT of overlapping fan-bases, some of which (I'd think) are rather large.

Well, didn't the Madonna songs get released in her "I'm Breathless" album?

Did Silvestri do work on this? Had never heard that before. I think producing an expanded CD of this would be a nightmare. Definitely A LOT of work. However, I think it would be a smash hit.I wonder if Warren Beatty has anything to do with clearing the rights for this. He won a major lawsuit a couple years over the rights to Dick Tracy and is very proud of the film, so if he knew there was a demand on a expanded soundtrack I would think he would get behind it.

There are also unreleased songs by Sondheim that did not appear in the film. Demos would be great but here again we face the obstacle of getting the rights cleared from Sondheim. I really wish Intrada would make some kind of comment on this. Tell us it is way too difficult or that it is in the works or that it will come out in 2013 or 2014. Anything.

I'm glad to see I am not the only one interested in seeing this happen.

So, I thought I would bump this thread just to see if there is still interest in an expanded CD release of this film score. I assume Intrada would be the one to do it but could I be wrong? Could someone else do it? I actually sent an email asking about this to Intrada maybe a year ago or so and got no response. I would love to know either way if this is a title Intrada is even considering. I would guess it would be a difficult project to put together. I would not only want Elfman's score but Sondheim's music as well. How involved would Madonna be involved with a project like this? Between Elfman, Beatty, Sondheim, and Madonna it could be a #@!*(&^ nightmare!

I would absolutely love to see Dick Tracy get an expanded/complete score. And quite honestly I don't feel like it's a question of if, but more likely when, it will be updated. It is still one of my all-time favorite Elfman scores of all time and definitely one of my favorite comic-book scores. I know the old soundtrack edited a lot of the score together from different parts of the movie into suites. I would prefer if they do a new release that it is chronologically formatted at least. I also know there is only about maybe 15 minutes of score that was not on the old album (about 20 actually since the main title on the old album was not the film version, either). But regardless, I really feel Intrada should try to get this one made!

I could do without the songs as I already have all of them, minus the film version of "Now I'm Following You', but I wouldn't be against those songs being included, either. However, if obtaining the rights to the songs was holding up a release I would say ditch the songs.

I'd be in for an expansion of Dick Tracy, as much as I am in for any Elfman release. I could give a rip about any songs from the movie, as they don't utilize score material.

I heard on another forum that more than likely the problem is with Beatty. DICK TRACY is like a baby to him. He fought to keep the rights in court. He's been tinkering with a special edition on dvd for years(they shot an interview & commentary with him back in early 2000 or 2001 with a special edition in mind) I've even heard rumors that he wants to do a sequel.

I wonder how much(if any)input he had with the HEAVEN CAN WAIT Soundtrack,another film Beatty directed. If that is the case, I'm sure Beatty wants to make sure it is done right.

That's not true. It's been debunked.

I had not heard it was debunked. I think it was around the time REDS came out on dvd I saw an interview where Beatty did in fact say he was recording commentary for a DICK TRACY release. This is the only thing I could find RE: a future DICK TRACY film ( from 2 years ago)

There was a rumor years ago, maybe in '01 or '02, that Disney was planning on doing a 'Vista Edition' of Dick Tracy on DVD. But it never came to fruition.

I asked Beatty directly. He doesn't know anything about a longer cut and doesn't know where that rumor came from (I do).

It's debunked.

The "rumored" director's cut is from an Aint it Cool News story from around 2001 that was simply a fanboy wishlist of a special edition. They ran it like it was true and it's spread over the internet like a virus to become fact over the past 10+ years.

Trust me, theatrical cut is the only cut and there are no special features... I heard it straight from the man.

Thanks Cliffs71. Good to know. I wonder then what the hold up could be if it is not Beatty. Surprised Disney would not want to get a special edition out there ASAP. They a lot to add as far as special features go. Maybe not any addition or deleted scenes but plenty of specials.I remember 20/20 doing a rather in depth report a few nights before the film opened. There was also a network 'making of' special that aired,not to mention the Premiere in Florida and Beatty's numerous appearances on Larry King,Arsenio,Oprah,etc. They could even possibly put together a documentary now on the cast members and reflect on the filming of DICK TRACY. So, as you can tell a SE blu-ray is on the top of my wish list and hearing Beatty's take on it makes me feel better.

Now,if we can only get a expanded CD release and Disney see's how well that sells maybe a SE Blu-Ray will come 'sooner than later'.

I have a copy of the original shooting script and it's VERY close to what we see on screen. In fact, I have no recollection of any complete deleted scenes that were axed. Anything else was just slight trims.

Well, that was the other question I asked him... he doesn't really believe in special editions and making ofs. He made an exception for Reds, but that was the exception. He said he's always up for a good argument to change his mind, but I don't think Disney are motivated enough to make that argument.

I tend to agree with him. Beatty is one of my favorite actors but believe it or not, I think I like and respect him more as a director. I guess it's pretty clear he has now retired (Although I was really hoping he would have finished his career and done his Howard Hughes project before retiring. Town & Country being his last film is just awful) Any more insight or stories you wish to share,please feel free. Beatty is rather reclusive & it sounds like you got a rare opportunity to pick his brain. Thanks again for the posts and inside tip on the Dick Tracy rumor and SE blu ray.
