Alexandre Desplat is scoring Kathryn Bigelow's new thriller about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden.

I was expecting this one to not have a score, seeing how hyper-realistic it is trying to be.

Meanwhile, the rival project (Code Name: Geronimo) will be scored by Paul Haslinger. Though this one has the better composer, I have a feeling the other film will be better (since it's avoiding politics in favor of action).

Oh no... I was hoping for Beltrami. Too bad.

Wonderful. Looks like another Desplat year!

Bigelow never uses the same composer twice.

I dunno, I don't think many people agree with you there. That film looks like a cheapo cash-in flick with no names, while this one is from an Academy Award winning director and Academy Award winning writer and stars some of the most in-demand young actors in Hollywood.

I wouldn't exactly call actors like William Fichtner, Anson Mount and Freddy Rodriguez no-names. Sure they aren't big stars but they are familiar character actors and the type of people who could have fun with a B-movie that you know won't take itself seriously.

I think being serious will be the downfall of Zero Dark Thirty. That and it's got Rooney Mara in it (despite an Oscar nomination that only happened because of Fincher, she is an awful actress).

I've only seen Rooney Mara in two films, but I thought she was a strong presence in both. (I can't compare her to Noomi Rapace's take on the famous Girl as I haven't seen the Swedish version.)

I'm not sure a movie about one of the most important historical events of the last few years should do anything but take itself seriously. And the filmmakers have promised that they're not trying to make a political piece, but follow the CIA hunt for Bin Laden and the resulting mission to kill him. The other film is only about the mission, as I understand it.

I know people keep talking about the movie as if it will have a political slant, but I'm trusting the filmmakers when they swear that's not their intention at all.

This is a film combining multiple Oscar winners and nominees, with a prime Oscar release date.

Code Name Geronimo appears to be going direct to video in the UK, and has no release date here:

Again, you're entitled to your opinion on the merits of the two films, but I don't think you'll find it's widely shared.

Getting back to the subject of Desplat's score... I'm very excited to hear what he will do. I suspect we all think it will sound like SYRIANA, as we probably suspect ARGO will as well. Curious if we'll be right.

FYI - she's not in this film.

So she was cut? That ups my interest from "no way" to "you're going to need a better trailer".

I googled "Rooney Mara" "Zero Dark Thirty". It looks like she never filmed any scenes, was only rumored to be in it as roles were being cast.

And there hasn't been a full trailer yet, only a teaser with voices and a series of maps, then some jump cut images at the end.

Oh no... I was hoping for Beltrami. Too bad.

Considering how bad his Oscar-nominated score(!) for The Hurt Locker was, I'm not.

Definitely a surprise. But I knew that after Guardians, Desplat had to do at least another score for the last months of 2012. Most of his 2012 scores have done in the first months (including Argo) and he has just finished Guardians.

According to Pope, Argo is a very diverse score with middle eastern influences (including beatbox) so I hope this one can be the same.

Amazing new trailer. I doubt that's Desplat's music, I don't think he has recorded yet.

Looks like it'll be the film I hoped it would be - a documentary-style thriller about the lengthy hunt for Osama Bin Laden. Kind of looks like UNITED 93 meets BLACK HAWK DOWN. I hope the Christmas release date, well after the US election, convinces people this film doesn't have political motivations, just artistic ones.

Kathryn Bigelow is one of the greatest action filmmakers of all time, topping nearly any other man in her field of work... so what convinces you this will favor towards "politics" rather than "action" compared to another film that is mounting to be a DTV production? The new trailer, if anything, gives incredible depth at the trademark intensity Bigelow will bring to this film, which is both meant to entertain and highlight a historical event (as someone mentioned above).

New full-length trailer just released:

[ETA: Had a problem embedding the video, so here is the link instead - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXkccpnoetw]

I really dig the moody piece used here, but I'm guessing it's not from Desplat's score. Though I certainly wouldn't mind if it were.
