Wow, that came out of left field. Surely something I would have tried to attend had it not been in October (frustratingly, all the cool film music stuff in Europe seems to happen in October, just when I'm tied up to obligatory practice in my pedagogy studies).

Double post due to the fact the board is slow as molasses.

Looks like a decent program but for me it would be overkill with the WSA the week after. Are you coming to Ghent Thor?

If anyone finds a way to reserve ticket to master class, let me know. that website and reservation system is a fucking mess!

hmm... it seems they have corrected it... looks interesting... I guess it would be great to finally meet Marco Beltrami...

Personally, I'm going to enjoy one hell of a film music week-end in Paris with this and the Jules Verne Festival concert conducted by David Newman two days before on Thursday 11th. Woo Hoo !

At this point, probably not. I'll have a meeting with the school on Monday, but they weren't very positive to me taking 2 days off in the obligatory school program in October. And I haven't heard anything from the admins regarding press accreditation and possibilities for a JNH interview (which would have made me go the extra mile to make this happen). Plus, the longer it takes, the more expensive airfare and hotel gets (and my wallet is already empty from the US trip).

So everything is against it at this point, I'm afraid.

Yeah, the Gaîté Lyrique website is totally counterintuitive. Don't forget to print your e-tickets !

I took some pictures of the master classes with the weak camera of my smartphone, I will post them later if I deem them acceptable.

So far the event organization is very professional and everything went smoothly. The only real bad point is that signing events with the composers and the masterclasses were overlapping, with the crew menacing to lock out people from the next MC, but that happily did not happen.

Ludovic Bource was very humble and humorous about his new celebrity and very informative about the process of scoring for film.

Marco Beltrami also was very humble, shy and soft-spoken, you could feel it was not one of his favorite exercise. He paid a very moving hommage to his mentor Jerry Goldsmith. Director Bertrand Tavernier was invited to talk about their collaboration on" In the Electric Mist" and was nothing short of complimentary, vowing to work with Beltrami again, possibly in a genre he's not yet recognized for.

Hans Zimmer was very talkative and very funny, but as the same time gave insight about the difficult relations with producers in Hollywood. He explained that composition for him should be a collaborative effort and not a solitary one, and concluded by wondering why French directors do nit find his telephone number.

Unfortunately he was in a hurry and the place holding the event was eager to close at 08:00pm precisely so many people were disappointed to be unable to approach him.

All the talks were conducted masterfully by French producer Stéphane Lerouge.

I'm looking forward to the concert tomorrow but so far this turns out to be a very promising event if it can root in Paris.

And a great concert it was. Aftet a glimpse at last year Audi Talents laureate Pascal Lengagne's 17mn original composition "Insight" (let's hope it will be released soon), the former "Madame Cinema" of the biggest French pay-TV network was the surprise host of the event.

The first hour was an hommage to the guest American composers. Beltrami selected a medley of Hellboy, I Robot, Mimic, I am Dina and Terminator 3, a good panorama of his talent but maybe a bit short. For Zimmer, we were given two pieces : Da Vinci Code and Pirates...

Both composers and Bource were awarded a prize from the City of Paris officials, and Beltrami's prepared acceptance speech in French was very much appreciated :-).

Finally the live concert for" The Artist" (with Bource himself at the piano) was a revelation for me, as I had not seen the movie before. What a brilliant hommage to Cinema and what a fitting score! By the way, it was announced this cine-concert would began a worldwide tour tour with 300 events booked!

The orchestra (made of players from various classical orchestra from Paris and its region) was top notch all along under the direction of Ernst van Tiel (who conducted the original sessions for "The Artist").

It was a very pleasant week-end for me, the Festival organization was very professional. My only fear is that
It becomes only an institutional and PR event, as it was clearly not founded by grassroot fans. But so far a good balance has been kept. Let's hope for more editions!

yes, it was a fantastic evening ! But really too short for the medley of Beltrami (and by the way, Mr Hand, you forget Knowing. And for T3, it was in fact the end credits of Mimic).

Sounds a like a fine selection from his work... how long is the whole suite? Did he conduct it too?
Was it an actual suite combining all scores into a single piece or did he more like performed individual pieces from these scores?

Our three stars cool (thanks to Eric for the picture) : https://anonfiles.com/file/82555f947217a894c5f39e3002e539a6

Thanks to starfe for correcting me.

Lokutus, I think the Beltrami suite was something like 15-20mn, and it was conducted by Ernst van Tiel. The tracks were played one after another with a slight break, but I think they flowed quite well due to the choices made by Beltrami. But for me this clearly is not a true "suite". The images of the movies were projected simultaneously on screen above the orchestra.
