I'll preorder with Amazon, but I'm a little leary of the current $31.30 [Import] listing, so I'll probably wait until they have product information. This is the one score I can't wait for!

Jason -

please check what you are linking to. Most of the Amazon links go to an expensive "import" (like many pre-orders do), and I doubt anyone of us would be going after this one. The actual CD will, in all likelihood, receive a new and "real" page closer to the release date. And seeing as Dec. 3rd is over two months away, this thread is likely to be on page 47 or something.

Here is the press release:

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY SOUNDTRACK 2CD SET DUE DECEMBER 11TH FROM WATERTOWER MUSIC

Featuring Original Music by Academy Award™ Winner Howard Shore With An Original Song Performed by Neil Finn
2 CD Special Edition Soundtrack Also Available

WaterTower Music has announced the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Original Motion Picture Soundtrack at all retailers on December 11th. The soundtrack will be available both digitally and as a 2 CD set. A Special Edition of the soundtrack featuring six exclusive bonus tracks, seven extended score cues, and deluxe liner notes will also be available December 11. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey features original score by Academy Award® winner Howard Shore recorded at famed Abbey Road studios by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally it includes an original song entitled "Song of the Lonely Mountain," written and performed by Neil Finn (Crowded House). The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of a trilogy of films from Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy), will be released in the U.S. on December 14, 2012.

Shore’s music for The Lord of the Rings Trilogy has been performed in concerts throughout the world. In 2003, Shore conducted the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in the world premiere of The Lord of the Rings Symphony in Wellington, New Zealand. Since then, the work has had over 140 performances by the world’s most prestigious orchestras, and has even been the subject of a book, Music of The Lord of the Rings Films.

"I have looked forward to returning to the imaginative world of Middle-earth for quite a while," says Shore. "I read all of the books by Tolkien, including The Hobbit, when I was in my twenties, and his deep love of nature and all things green resonates deeply with me."

"It’s a thrill for us to work with Howard Shore on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey soundtrack" stated WaterTower Music head Jason Linn, "His reputation and body of work have long inspired us, and we look forward to another successful partnership as we embark on the next chapter of our journey together."

One of today’s most respected, honored, and active composers and music conductors, Howard Shore previously worked with director Peter Jackson on The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, which stands as his most towering achievement to date. He won three Academy Awards for his music for those films, two for Best Original Score, and one for Best Original Song. Shore has also won numerous other honors for his film work, including four Grammys and three Golden Globe Awards.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on WaterTower Music in the United States and Decca Records outside the United States. It will be available on December 11, 2012. The track listings for the 2 CD Standard and 2CD Deluxe versions are as follows:

WOW - two discs of score! Amazing!

I'm a bit confused - what are the tracks marked "Extended Version" extended from?

In the regular 2-disc edition (vs the 2-disc special edition), are they shorter versions of those tracks?

Also, hoping and praying there won't be download-only bonus tracks, as Watertower is wont to do.

I guess these tracks are extended on the Special Edition set over the regular set.

Depending on how extended the tracks are, I may be a sucker and buy both.

How bizarre that the regular edition is still 2 discs.

Granted if this were a Japanese video game it'd likely get the complete score in the first go...

Nice to see it's all score and not some stupid extra crap though.

EXCLUSIVE BONUS TRACKS
A Very Respectable Hobbit
Erebor
The Dwarf Lords
The Edge of the Wil

Surprised and delighted the second disc is more score music. Though it sounds like its gonna be another Easter Hunt debacle where one will have to purchase individual tracks from different venders in order to get everything just like Tron Legacy.

Here is what I preordered from amazon, which looks like the special edition: http://www.amazon.com/The-Hobbit-Unexpected-Original-Soundtrack/dp/B009O07NDY/ref=pd_sim_sbs_m_1

It was a gold box special a few days ago, so I think I got it for $21. I also think the price will drop again. Amazon traditionally sells Watertower's single disc major releases (e.g. Harry Potter, Dark Knight Rises, Sherlock Holmes) for $9.99, so hopefully the two disc set will dip a bit more in price. But we will see . . .

haha I think we are very much used to our expanded film score sets by our beloved labels that when we see something like this many imagine a regular version and an expanded version already.

I think those "extended" tracks may actually refer to how they appear in the actual movie, with the ones on the movie being shorter versions.

If both the regular and deluxe editions are two CDs, what's the reason for having two editions? Usually when there are two editions released simultaneously (not just for CDs, but for DVDs and Blu-rays) there's a basic single-disc version and a double-disc version with additional goodies on the second disc, which makes sense, but here?

But whatever the reason, I'm sure I'll eventually get the deluxe release myself as well.
