I liked the movie and score much better after seeing the film.

I'm going to see this tonight. Does it suck or not suck? How is the score? Does it suck or not suck?

The score definitely doesn't suck; charming, moving and thrilling by turns. The movie itself... well, it could have been worse.

OK, sounds like the score is above average and the movie is OK, but worth seeing at least once.

Thanks guys and gals!

There is a brief discussion of Maleficent's theme, with musical notation:

I agree with Steve Vertlieb and found the film an extremely interesting take on the story, and the score suits it quite well. I know the composer produced the album, so I assume that the sequencing of the tracks on the album is his, alternating dark battle cues with the lighter, more magical faerie-land music. I'd be curious if the proper film sequence of the tracks might make for an even more rewarding listening. Does any one know the correct film order of the cues?

Ummm... do the previous posts mean the tracks are scrambled up on this one (Maleficent)?

I`m looking forward to this score. The film too. Jolie has presence, at the fairly dependable risk of repeating myself.

EDIT: Damn it... I hate when scramblers happen. Try eggs, not film music please...

My review of MALEFICENT, for anyone who's interested:

To anyone's who seen the film: is the Suite in the film? Does it play as an overture?

EDIT: Never mind, I see from Jon's review that it plays over the end credits.

In that case the jwfan site has the chronological order wrong -- unless the post-song end credits is a reprise.

If Jon's review is correct and if the end title is the first time that the suite is heard in the film, it's hard to "hold the audience in the palm of your hand" if they've exited the theater:

"In the film it forms the second half of the end credits (after the Lana Del Rey song), but on CD it provides a wonderful introduction to most of the score’s main themes, including an elongated performance of the see-sawing four-note choral motif for Maleficent’s curse, before exploding into glorious spine-tingling majesty just after the 4-minute mark. Music like this showcases everything that is good about James Newton Howard, and also acts as a master class in how to hold an audience in the palm of your hand, building the tension and building the tension, before allowing the emotional rush of musical adrenaline they have been craving."

I'm really starting to fall in love with this score.
It's another CD that improves for me with having seen the film.
It's great to hear JNH writing fully fleshed out cues again, with lots of interesting detail going on within the tracks.
I love those raspy brass blasts he works into the action/battle cues and all his themes and motifs are starting to take a hold of me now. I especially love the sweet little melody he gets going from when Aurora meets Prince Phillip.
Two things though. I remember a lovely little piece in the film that I expected to begin The Christening track, but it appears to be missing, with the latter part of the sequence only being on the CD.
Also, is the music when Mal's wings are taken also missing from the CD?
Major bummer if so. I would have much rather had those cues over tracks like Iron Gauntlet or Three Peasant Women.
Still, this will most certainly be in my Top 5 scores of the year. Maybe even #1.

Repeated listens have really opened this score up for me. Much more complex and subtle than I first thought. 20-odd times in the car to work over the last month have made me wonder if the old JNH scores were that way too--repeated listens needed for the score to begin to coalesce. Great stuff!
