When I was a teenager I watched the original Psycho in a theater with an audience -- many of whom had never seen it -- and they were riveted to their seats, and let out some blood curdling screams more than once. Despite being an "old movie" it was still considerably effective.

Conversely, I watched the remake some years later with some friends who had never seen the original, and they were wholly unimpressed.

On the extras the filmmakers claim that they were motivated to do the remake because "they wanted to bring it to a new generation of filmgoers who will not watch a black and white film"
Altruism, huh?

I guess I shouldn't judge negatively because I only watched it once when it first came out. Maybe I should give it another chance. I just remember asking why Vince Vaughn was cast as Norman Bates?
