The version on disc 3 has the gong (tam-tam) but the one on CD 2 doesn't. It comes in near the end of the cue several times.

I suppose it's a case of different small variations being recorded at the sessions. IIRC the film uses the take(s) with the gong at the end of the cue. Curious if anyone else noticed.

Really enjoy this release. I spoke to Basil on the telephone around 1991, or when the expanded Varese CD came out. It's a conversation I remember fondly. His wife told how the floor of their hotel room in Rome was covered with music - all the cues were spread all over the floor, apparently. Basil told me he felt the Pit Fight cue was "too Rozsa". I always remembered that phrase.....and he didn't speak too fondly of the sequel....which he called "Conan the Pretender"!

Does anyone have any personal interactions with Basil they'd like to share?

I remember a member of MMUK telling a story of one of those overseas gatherings (I can't seem to locate it), before Basil died, where he and some score lovers were talking at a table, and one of them had to go to the bathroom.

While in there, John Williams stood at the urinal next to him. He was to shy to even say "Hi". He came out, told them and Basil what had happened.

And Basil said: "So ... did you see it?"

Yes, I listened to the whole thing this evening and did notice that difference in those "Orgy" tracks.

My favorite track, Atlantean Sword, also is slightly different than the album version. At the very end when Conan climbs out of the cave and cuts his chains with the sword, the disc 1 version has a second of silence whereas the album version has a metallic strike effect and no long fadeout. Interesting differences.

One more story...this didn't happen to me, but the story is too good not to share:

A friend of mine had arrived in Los Angeles and was beginning his studies in film scoring at USC. He was able to get invited to some music benefit gathering happening in L.A. and there were going to be lots of film composers around. He was having a great evening with his friends, pointing out composers they knew and also having a chance to talk to Basil Poledouris. During the conversation he excused himself to go to the bathroom. In the bathroom, as he was standing at the urinal, who should take up a place at the next urinal but John Williams himself! Of course, being a urinal situation, conversation is forbidden due to the unwritten Bathroom Code of Men. So, my friend simply zipped up, washed and headed out, far too star-struck to actually wait for Williams (and that's kind of weird anyway to stalk someone outside the bathroom door). He returned to where his friends and Poledouris were still talking and he excitedly said, "You'll never guess what happend! John Williams was in there using the urinal next to me!"

Without a second thought, Poledouris smiled and asked, "Really? So...did you see it?"

I entered a bathroom not knowing the producer of VERSUS was standing at a urinal in there and I hit him with the door.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the difference in "The Kitchen" yet; the version on the Intrada edition is a different edit from the version that appears in the film and on the Varese disc. This is quite clearly what was recorded, and in the film there is an insert from later in the piece. I had always wondered why that sounded like an edit on the Varese disc: because it was!

I heard that as well, and thought the same thing. Initially, I was a bit concerned that maybe Intrada had released an alternate take by accident... but as you did, I listened to the other versions, and they are clearly edited.

And in Track 1, the percussion prologue is mixed so unrealistically loud that the adjoining Anvil of Crom starts with less impact than it should, volume-wise.
It's presented at a proper relative level in the prologue w/narration "extra" track (Disc 3), where the prologue drum is at a realistic scale with the drums that continue in the following orchestral part, giving Anvil of Crom a more forceful-sounding entry.

I just suffered through the US 2011 Blu-Ray release of Conan. Suffered, due to all the problems with the music mix. Choir so low, or downright missing. like in the Battle of the Mounds. There are parts where solo choir and orchestra alternate (as the horsemen close in on the Mounds), and there is just nothing there in that part. Sounds so bad, hearing that missing.

I noticed the Orgy cue in the Blu-Ray is missing the gong too, but the gong is in the earlier audio mixes of the film. I've always suspected the horns in the main title were overdubbed with more horns (perhaps the same ones on a dedicated track) to give more "weight" to the melody. In the Blu-Ray, as the end credits roll, you hear a normal-sized complement of horns - and the melody has a bit less "weight" to it.

I noticed too, that the night filters were missing from some scenes - like when Conan is chased to the crypt by the dogs, and when the thieves escape from the Orgy.

So much of the score sounds amazing though. It's a shame the Bluray has these problems. I was inspired to rewatch the film - thanks to Intrada's great CD release. Thank goodness we can hear the music sound great, properly mixed, on the 3CD release.

Exact. It's a strange but helas common mastering choice : diminish the dynamic range in favor of loudness.

But overall, Intrada did a great job !
