http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2013/04/05/bear-mccreary-on-composing-da-vincis-demons/ "Having never done a period piece before [...], McCreary dug through old music books and worked with a music historian to integrate an “unprecedented level of detail” in his work. In particular, he found ways to both highlight and blend the sound of authentic 15th century instruments, like the viola de gamba, and musical cues with his own ideas. For the theme that plays when a Medici family member appears onscreen, for example, McCreary worked in a historically accurate six-note sequence that was written by the infamous family’s court composer. ... McCreary also took an inventive approach to creating the main theme for the character of da Vinci. Inspired by the fact that the artist would write backwards and forwards, McCreary composed his protagonist’s theme so that it could literally be played backwards and forwards. The difference between the two versions, he says, is that when played forward, the theme is “very inspiring.” “You’ll hear [the forwards version] when da Vinci is getting his ideas,” says McCreary. “The backwards idea, because it changes the order of the music, feels very dark and conflicted.”"

For those interested it runs 90.5 minutes, so plenty of music on there. That's great! I'm waiting for the CD - Bear made it clear in his Sparks & Shadows press release that he knows fans enjoy the physical CDs and he'd continue releasing his scores that way as well. He has also stated his preference for CD (and even Vinyl) medium for quality reasons, but it seems he has embraced the digital release medium as a business decision because that's where everything is going. It also makes sense to leverage considering the whole reason he started his own label - he wanted to be able to get his material out in a timely fashion. His BSG CD's would be released anywhere from 4 to 9 months after a project would wrap (and some of his other projects after a year... or two... or three in the case of Caprica). This on the other hand is allowing him to release the score to the 1st season of DaVinci's Demons before the final episode of the season has even aired.... that is the business model he is going for. I wouldn't be surprised if he experiments with releasing tracks piecemeal as the season progresses and then the full album as a full set when the season finishes. He sort of did that in this case - released the main title a couple months ago as a single & the first track of the album, and now is following with the rest. The studios & boutique labels are going to have to eventually embrace the digital release paradigm because as the collection of unreleased scores grows smaller, the potential for expanding or even maintaining the revenue stream will as well, unless they start making these available digitally (which I know will require additional legal negotiation work as most releases did not get rights for digital release).
