Why is it soooo expensive to use Registered or Express mail at SAE? $15 for Registered and $25 for Express? The packages weigh so little. I can go and pay less for shipping the same type of item personally. Seems like price gouging to make more $

Sorry to bump this old thread, but since my question has to do with shipping costs, I thought not to start a new thread.

I didn't know that SAE has an ebay store, I just found out today.
And I just saw that the shipping cost to my country (for a 2cd set) is lower than buying this from their site.
At the SAE site it's $12.50 and at ebay it's $7.10.
(price of the cd is the same)

although at ebay it says:
International items may be subject to customs processing and additional charges

So, is it safer to buy from the site or ebay?
Maybe if I buy from ebay for cheaper I end up paying more due to additional charges?

The steep international shipping cost is one of the reasons why I never did much business with SAE back when I bought CD's, despite their good customer service.

As for taxes and customs, that is not something you pay to the seller (like ebay), but to the right authorities in your country once the package arrives.

In my UK experience, customs charges only apply when the package is worth over £70-80 (although I did get the fairly sizable, £85 EVIL DEAD anthology boxset from Australia and wasn't charged).

And in Norway, the limit was recently upped from $25 to $40 -- but the new limit INCLUDES the shipping, so it's not really much of a difference. Especially if the shipping is as expensive as SAE and other vendors.

It's a ridiculously low limit (lower than most other countries in the world) and a remnant from the 70s.

Hmm.. I have never been charged anything in customs.
I'm not sure how it works.
Largest cost of package I've received I think was 2 Blurays from Japan, 110 euros worth.

I'm no expert, but I assume it's to do with the value of the package being imported. If you didn't incur charges for 110 Euros, I think you'll be okay buying a few CDs at a time from SAE.

Well, maybe the limit on DVDs/Blurays and such stuff is much higher..

Still wondering though, why this difference of more than $5 in shipping between SAE site store and SAE ebay store.

You may, therefore, be interested in the rules which apply ...

Section 2

Whilst customs' duties are probably not relevant, the imposition of VAT on purchases over GBP15.00 are ... and I've found that the Royal Mail handling charge (which normally acts as the import agent for such postal purchases) exceeds the VAT. I think the last time it happened to me the RM charge was GBP8.00 ... and I had to collect the package from the sorting office since the postman cannot collect the payment at your door.

Note the sentence re: the buyer is responsible for the value being accurately stated on the Customs' Declaration!

Ebay set limits on shipping charges for certain types of items.

As for customs fees, we aren't subject to them in the USA thank goodness. I feel for you guys who have to deal with that.

Not even if you order something from abroad?

Sometimes there are small exchange rate fees.

I understand import duty is payable for goods imported into the U.S. from Europe if the value is above $200.

Nope. Never.

The only fee one might ever have to pay when ordering abroad from the USA is to their credit card company which may add a currency conversion fee to items purchased in foreign currencies. Using Paypal is one way to get around that.

Nope, not unless you're dealing in high volumes as a business or something.

To add to what solium said, the only fee one is generally subject to when ordering abroad from the USA is a currency conversion fee that credit card companies charge when purchasing merchandise in foreign currencies. If the company transacts in USD, however, even though they're located abroad, no such fee is charged. Another way to avoid currency conversion fees is using Paypal.

I think Paypal too has currency conversion fees.

It appears so, but I just double-checked and the last time I placed an order with CDJapan and sent payment via Paypal in Japanese yen, I wasn't charged a conversion fee, so maybe it's only charged under certain circumstances.
