Hey all,

Just left a message at Intrada's board but was wondering if this had been answered here... saw a thread or two about it but no apparent answer... the remastered version of "The Orgy" (not from the original album) appears to be missing some big splashy percussion near the climax (ha ha) of the piece. Anyone know why? Missing overlays (which would be my first guess)? I'm certainly not bitching since the other version is right there on disc three. Just curious.

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this!

Matt

Nothing, huh?

Oh well. Maybe Doug or Roger can help when they return from vacation.

Don't think it's actually missing as such. Sounds more like a different mix.
I must say those gong crashes/swooshes in "The Orgy" on the original album always sounded flat and overly processed to me.

But in saying that, I had gotten used to them. : )

With all due respect, I'm 99% sure there are things missing from the remastered track. That gigantic gong sound you speak of... it's not there, not even extremely low. Personally, I miss it because it gave the ending of the piece much more sturm and drang. But that's me.

You are correct, there is a gong on the original album mix that is missing (or inaudibly mixed) on the remix.

Also missing from the remix is that cymbal at the end of "Atlantean Sword" (which accompanies Conan cutting off his chains).

Interesting... Occam's Razor would seem to suggest that a layer of percussion sweetening may not have been available, or kept with the original masters. Very curious to hear what the folks at Intrada say when they can.

Ravel's BOLERO being clearly the pattern of that piece, the gong crashes are saddly missing. BUT the original mix is still there and sounds good, so it's not really a problem. There are other mix or editing choices I don't like much in this album, but eh, it's 2012 : one can make his definitive Conan album via CD burning or playlist.

oh all these drum bits...

the question is are these missing gongs of the orgy in the movie or not?

well the dum-dum-dum dududum (lacking a better description lol) when subotai finds conan at the tree of woe is there now which was absent in the varese album version.

also i would have preferred to have the wolf witch bit play out like in the movie even if it's a bit repetitive but there is a nice build up from faintly in the background to really loud and agressive until it (or she) explodes...

also would have liked to have the film version (from the varese album) of the kitchen as an extra...

Now, now... let's not turn this into a bitch fest. The album is amazing and the mix is fine. I'm just wondering what happened to those bits of percussion, which most definitely are there in the film mix.

it's not about bitching, just saying it would have been nice (with 25 minutes free space on disc 3)

Hang on: I thought the Intrada had the complete film score. The Varese has music not included on the Intrada? Is there more than one track?

the varese had the film version = edited (slightly rearranged) of the kitchen, the intrada is the
original (unedited) version. Maybe the scene turned out longer than expected, i prefer the film version thou...

Choices have been made and I respect Doug. He released the complete CONAN THE BARBARIAN, one of the greatest scores ever composed. All the music was remastered from a different source, things would be different...

I don't believe this is at all in dispute. The original poster and others like me were curious about some changes or differences in this release, is all. I for one am excited about this! Now if it'd just arrive. smile

Please to clarify, Baz. Are you being ironic or do you honestly believe this release is a mess. If it's the latter, can you give us your review?

I think it's horrible, for several reasons. But if others are pleased with it, that's good.

Sort of. The Varese features the discrete version of "The Kitchen", whereas on the Intrada it is crossed-faded from the "Warpaint" cue.

I'm not complaining about the Intrada release. I love it, because it contains things we never had (and never knew existed) before. My iPod sequence blends what I consider the best bits of the Intrada, Varese and Tadlow CDs.
