Friend or foe I tend to speak my mind. Appreciate the respect. smile

I speak mostly in jest anyway when I say the things I do around here, and believe me, I too get bent out of shape over just as many little idiosyncratic non-issues as the rest of us!

Several years later I still don't know what to think about the Intrada Conan. As much as I love Intrada and as much as I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, I don't think the full story of what was going on with those original tapes has been told. Doug is generally a competent mastering engineer, so the really wacky EQ situation, I'm guessing, is due to some problem with the condition of the tapes that was never discussed.

Also particularly sticking in my craw, and I don't think this was ever explained either, is why the first take of "Anvil of Crom," which I absolutely love to death and thank god they included, sounds more or less normal, whereas the album take, even from the supposedly new masters, sounds worse than pretty much every other track. (What it sounds like to me is that the orchestra couldn't play the song so they recorded it in pieces, leading to a weird-sounding recording that couldn't be cleaned up.)

Anyone find it maybe a bit ironic, that in this era where labels have really reconditioned us to "listen harder" with numerous reissue/remaster/rebuild cd reissues, we did.....and are now analyzing every bar & second of these things? I hate to speak against the labels a bit, but with so much push to re-buy scores so many times, it has to be expected.
The wake up call for me was Predator - my Varese disc I thought was just fine, but I dutifully got in line to buy along, subsequent editions. The wake up portion for me was the public agreement - yeah, the Varese sounded awful, oh yeah! What the hell is wrong with MY ears?

Ear of the beholder, something to think about - now I'll go back to listen to CONAN, with new and now probably biased ears listening for flaws.
Thanks interwebs....

...

I'll buy this all over again if it's ever updated.

Theoretically it might be possible to add these upgraded tracks to their forthcoming "Conan the Destroyer" release (and even add the sell value of it). Perhaps you might want to suggest this on their discussion board?
