This is a comments thread about Blog Post: Film Score Friday 1/4/13 by Scott Bettencourt

I saw Jack Reacher yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. For all its grittiness, killing, and thiller-mystery components it still wasn't afraid to throw in some humour - well placed IMO. I hope there are more Jack Reacher films (and put together just as well).

What also excited me was the score: in a time when scores such as those for the Hobbit, and the work of John Williams seems to be more the exception than the rule, it was such a relief to see a current big Hollywood action pic with a score that doesn't sound like synth droning/sound design/ Media Ventures slumming it.

Whilst there may be no memorable themes per se (there were motifs - particularly one featuring a descending third), the score was still performed by a live orchestra with the music being developed to match the progress of the film.

I believe the current approach of Hans Zimmer and MV has its place, but I also hope the score to Jack Reacher will see the start of a return to more "old-school/organic" film scoring.

Happy New Year everyone smile
