If its been genuinely canned during its screening run and the writers werent working on assumption of no series three, then it is quite possible its going to end with strands unresolved.
There is so few things i enjoy on tv - but when tv series are good - us or uk productions - they are unmissable.

Victorian-era drama Ripper Street will not return for a 3rd season after failing to pull sufficient numbers for BBC One. A spokesperson tells Deadline, “We are very proud of Ripper Street which has enjoyed two highly ambitious series on BBC One. However, the second series didn’t bring the audience we hoped and in order to make room for creative renewal and new ideas it won’t be returning.” The eight-part crime series that’s a co-production with BBC America, stars Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg. It’s set in 1889 London in the aftermath of the Jack The Ripper murders. The action centers on the H Division group of detectives who investigated the murders and tried to keep the peace in a panicked section of east London. Season 1 debuted in the UK in late 2012 and on BBC America in early 2013. Its first BBC One season started out strong and ended up averaging about 5M over the initial run. Season 2 kicked off in the UK in October, but last Monday’s episode was down to 3.26M for a 13% share. This season, it’s had to contend with airing up against ITV’s hit reality show I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, which last week hit a low of 8.21M. Word of Ripper Street‘s cancellation was met with upset in the UK, where twitter was vocal about the decision. Actor Flynn told BBC radio, “We’re all in absolute shock because it was a wonderful job and we feel like it’s kind of this unfinished work. So we’re hoping it will turn around if anybody from the BBC is listening.”

Good finale up to a point. Although as predicted the final episode resolved some strands but not the key one.
Not quite a Planet of the apes mid-series stoppage but certainly unsatisfactory and incomplete.
Knew i hated the bbc. One of the few good things on their poxy channel and they can it.

Luckily, even though we’re all suffering through the terrible experience of waiting through yet another interminable wait for a new season of Sherlock, we’ve got plenty to entertain ourselves with in the meantime since many members of the show’s cast seem to be keeping fairly busy with a variety of projects. And now there’s another name to add to the list of Sherlock stars in unexpected places – Louise Brealey is joining the cast of period crime drama Ripper Street.
Best known for her role as Sherlock’s brilliant but slightly awkward pathologist Molly Hooper, Brealey will play Dr. Amelia Frayn, a trailblazing female Victorian doctor who runs the Obsidian Clinic in Whitechapel.
“I’m playing one of the first women doctors,” Brealey told the Radio Times. “I’m really excited because I did history at university and I love a bit of research. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson blazed the trail in the 1870s and in the intervening decade or so a few extremely intrepid and unusual women started learning to be doctors themselves.”
The story of Ripper Street’s third season is a bit magical in and of itself – as the period drama was originally cancelled by the BBC following its second outing last year. However, the axed Victorian series was given new life three months later when, due in part to an avid fan campaign, it was revived thanks to a deal with Amazon Prime Instant Video, which acquired subscription streaming rights for the show in the UK. (It appears that Ripper Street will still air in the US on BBC America.)
“Everyone’s just delighted that it’s got another crack of the whip," said Brealey. "They felt that they weren’t quite done with it. I think it’s that feeling when you’ve had half the biscuit and left it somewhere in the house: you can’t quite rest until you’ve found it. So it’s like they’re all finishing off a custard cream with smiles on their faces!”
Series 3 is currently filming in Dublin but no airdate has been set yet for either side of the pond.

Amazon has also announced that the third season of its period procedural drama "Ripper Street" will premiere on its U.K. version of its Amazon Prime Instant Video service starting on November 14th and running through to December 26th.
The eight-episode season will subsequently air on BBC One in the U.K. and BBC America in the U.S. in 2015, but the UK Amazon Prime version will include scenes not shown in the BBC versions. There's no plans for Amazon Prime in the U.S. to pickup the season.

BBC Home Entertainment is bringing Ripper Street: Season Three to Blu-ray this summer. The third season of the BBC One mystery series stars Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn, Adam Rothenberg and MyAnna Buring, and streets on June 23rd.
Synopsis: Matthew Macfadyen stars as Detective Inspector Reid, Jerome Flynn as the newly promoted Detective Inspector Bennet Drake, Adam Rothenberg as Captain Homer Jackson and MyAnna Buring as Long Susan. The eight episode third series picks up in 1894, four years after the culmination of Season Two, years in which Reid, Drake, Jackson and Long Susan have been split and divided by those events. As this series begins, however, the violent heist of a goods train sets off a cataclysmic chain reaction that is to return them to each other's side, before spiraling uncontrollably toward a conclusion that will leave them changed forever.
The 2-disc Blu-ray release of Ripper Street: Season Three is presented in 1080p with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround. Special features have yet to be detailed.
