I have watched several DC (and Marvel) direct-to-dvd movies featuring Batman, Superman, Iron Man etc
and they all are lame.
This is esp. disappointing considering the classy BATMAN:TOS and MASK OF THE PHANTASM
Just watched a dvd with the intriguing premise that Lex Luthor becomes president of the USA!
Unfortunately, like other titles in their series, nothing is done with it. Instead, we get 90 minutes of pure mayhem (emphasis on explosions!)
I guess they are aiming at a different market than BTAS.
Unless i am missing something?

None of them are in the same series as the DC Animated Universe (Batman the Animated Series, Superman the Animated Series, Justice League, JL: Unlimited, Batman Beyond), nor are they within any continuity of their own - the Superman of Superman: Doomsday is a completely different character than the Superman of Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. This allows them to push the characters in different directions, with different voices and animation styles. The concept is good, the execution has, for my money, been so-so. The DC animated movies are mostly based on runs in the comics (slightly altered to work as a film). I thought Green Lantern: First Flight and Batman: Year One were very good. Some of them are only middling quality. The scores are always better than the movies.
I've found the DC movies much better than the Marvel animated movies, although there may be a slight bias. While I do like both major comics labels, at some point in my younger years I decided to care more about DC.

to be honest, the last 'season' of BTAS wasn't that great either.
They changed the character looks (Catwoman is like a pixie!) and had some truly awful
sci-fi/horror like stories (giant insects etc)

These are indeed a mixed bag. I absolutely loved the recent The Dark Knight Returns entries. But while part 1 was better than The Dark Knight Rises in my opinion, part 2 was sadly not quite as good, but highly enjoyable.
My favorites so far are Green Lantern: First Flight, Justice League: The New Frontier, The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Year One.
The good, but not perfect are: Batman: Under The Red Hood, Superman Vs. The Elite, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse (this one is very flawed, but still makes the cut for the performances)
The bad (this comes with the clause that some of these are watchable, but just not very good) Batman Gotham Knights, Superman: Doomsday, Justice League: Doom, Wonder Woman (man did I hate this one), All-Star Superman (too much information for such a short film), Justice League: Crisis On Two Earths (the animated series already did this and did it better), Superman/Shazam: The Return Of Black Adam (man is this a dull collection, however, I loved The Spectre segment but was bored by the rest.)
Just my two cents.

That was actually The New Batman Adventures, technically a separate series, although it was basically a continuation of B:TAS's continuity. The design was streamlined because B:TAS had ended and much of the crew was now working on Superman: The Animated Series, so they wanted a similar style so that cross-overs between the two shows could work.
Many of the character redesigns were awful. No red lips on Joker? Poison Ivy and especially Catwoman became pencil-thin and ugly, and despite popular opinion I hated the Scarecrow redesign as well. I thought those two seasons of New Adventures was pretty hit-and-miss. When it was good it was really good ("Over the Edge"), but when it was bad it was really bad ("Critters").
Actually, one of the main reasons for the re-design was that less lines, meant less cost to create each frame, which saved a lot of time and money.
And I have to say, I'm with you 100% on all the comments on the villain re-designs.
I'd like to also point out Mr. Freeze was eroded away from his more human look, with menacing build, to a Cartoon Network stick figure with cartoony head and weird jaw. And the Penguin was completely changed; he looked more like some poor immitation of the 1066 Penguin, only minus Meredith.
And the Batman we saw in TAS original run, would never have allowed a little kid, no matter how well trained, to trail along to fight bad guys. That was one of the worst things of the new run.

i always suspected Catwoman (and possibly Bat Girl) were redrawn to de-sexualize them.
You gotta admit (as the series producers did in a commentary track)she is one 'well-endowed" woman!

I am giving up on these dvds.
For some reason, i keep thinking that just because folks like Romano & Timm, and Dini are involved it will have the same qualities as B;TAS.
It's time i give up the ghost.
These dvds are aimed at the audience who watches violent video games, and listens to gansta' rap & heavy metal.

So I take it you weren't familiar with Frank Miller's 4 issue series.
I read it.
The book at least gives the characters some depth thru the use of interior monologue.
This aspect is totally absent from the movie
Also, i dont think there is a scene where Batman lands on a roof populated by 50 machine wielding policeman and escapes unharmed after dodging app. 10.000 bullets!!!
