I can only think of England Made Me, Mountbatten the Last Viceroy and Inseminoid (and I think a lot of people would be happy if the latter never made it to CD at all).
I vaguely recall an LP release of a film when he went under the name Patrick John Scott.
What other film scores were released on LP by John Scott but haven't made it to shiny disc yet?
Thanks.

To KEVIN MCGANN-I agree of all the constant fine work of MR SCOTT, INSEMINOID just didn't click for me.

I used have The Deceivers on LP, but never found it on disc. It had a great main theme and fantastic action piece on side two. I remember Derek Elley giving it rave reviews in Films and Filming. Very good score. Would love to own it on cd.

Kevin, like you I am rediscovering John Scott - a brilliant composer!

The Long Duel (1967) hasn't made it to CD yet.

I think he went under the name of Patrick John Scott for that one.

"The Deceivers" was definitely on CD -- I have it. It's a terrific score.

As for the legitimacy of "Mountbatten," I remember reading at the time that all those Movietrack Classic CDs were unlicensed (they included such other British productions as Carl Davis's "Champions" and Trevor Jones's "To the Ends of the Earth"). But I'm not sure, so I hope I'm not spreading libelous rumors.

By my estimation, there's 6 LP programs not on CD:

  • ROCKET TO THE MOON ('67) on a rare U.K. Polydor (as Patrick John Scott)
  • THE LONG DUEL ('67) (as Patrick John Scott)
  • ENGLAND MADE ME ('73) back to simply John Scott
  • INSEMINOID ('81)
  • MOUNTBATTEN ('85)
  • THE WHISTLE BLOWER ('87)

Yes, thanks! Just found it very reasonably priced! Now Carl Davis' score for Champions is another one on the wishlist...

Hi Brendon. You don't have a spare copy of Lionheart do you? wink

Agreed, he is a brilliant composer. The strange thing is, I always knew this but didn't pursue my love of the LP's I had by him (Greystoke, King Kong Lives and Man On Fire).
As I grow bored of a lot of today's scores and composers, I'm looking back to the stuff I might have missed from my soundtrack collecting heyday. It has resulted in my discovery of composers like Jerry Fielding and Stu Phillips, in addition to Mr Scott.
It's fun trawling the net, looking for titles that may be of interest to me.
I managed to bag a copy of The Deceivers on CD for about 10 dollars a few weeks back.
It's in my 'to play' list, along with many other goodies smile
The cheapest title available by him is Ruby and that's also an enjoyable CD, especially if you like Man On Fire and Shoot To Kill.

Has Scott's A STUDY IN TERROR (1965) had a legitimate CD release?

No sorry Kevin. I only have the four tracks that appeared on a Van Damme compilation cd. What a theme!

Believe it or not I have only got Greystoke, King Kong Lives, Walking Thunder, Man on Fire, Shoot To Kill and John Scott Conducts His Favourite Film Scores....and I love them all! When I get some spare money I really would like The Final Countdown and Anthony & Cleopatra...and now Ruby, based on your recommendation!

I wonder what Bruce Kimmel thinks of John Scott.
    Those first three titles;

ROCKET TO THE MOON ('67) on a rare U.K. Polydor (as Patrick John Scott)

THE LONG DUEL ('67) (as Patrick John Scott)

ENGLAND MADE ME ('73) back to simply John Scott

look like they would make great Kritzerland releases!

"Has Scott's A STUDY IN TERROR (1965) had a legitimate CD release?"
    ----------------------------------
Scott re-recorded the score with the Hollywood Symphony for his own JOS label and said he improved on the lesser performance of the original score and LP release.
So, the original film score tracks are only available on LP, but the score is available on CD with improved sound and performance.

ROCKET TO THE MOON ('67) on a rare U.K. Polydor (as Patrick John Scott)
Polydor is now part of Universal Music Group.

THE LONG DUEL ('67) (as Patrick John Scott)
This LP was on the Atco label in the U.S., now part of Warner Music Group. But the record was on Polydor in Britain, so that may present a problem.

ENGLAND MADE ME ('73) back to simply John Scott
This is a really rare one. The LP is a mixture of score tracks and popular songs from the 1930s. A company named American Artists Entertainment Group became involved in motion picture distribution and soundtracks in the 1970s, including ENGLAND MADE ME starring Peter Finch and Michael York. The soundtrack from that film featured vocalist Lana Cantrell and The London Philharmonic Orchestra, and was released through American Artists’ record label East Coast Records in cooperation with Dick James Music, (England).

The company’s website makes the claim that "Remembering," a song from that soundtrack sung by Lana Cantrell (music by John Scott, lyrics by Arthur Hamilton), was nominated for Best Song in a Motion Picture by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. This is not true. The song did not receive a nomination. Perhaps it was on the short list of possible nominees. In any case, American Artists Entertainment Group (AAEG) would seem to be the current owner of the soundtrack from ENGLAND MADE ME. AAEG’s main corporate office is located at 2106 79th Court, Vero Beach, Florida 32966-1365 with Associate offices located in New York City and Hollywood.

You're welcome - though that's a small finite number in comparison to the amount of unreleased music by John Scott, especially pre-'80s titles!

Don't get me started on DOOMWATCH ('72), TROG ('70) & VIOLENT ENEMY ('67).

I think some John Scott fans would go BERSERK! ('67) over his late-'60s/early-'70s scores if they would only get more distribution & exposure.

Maybe member YOR will join the John Scott cause? smile

YOR: "YOR want TROG! YOR want TROG!" ... chanting petition continues ...

I have the old LP of ENGLAND MADE ME. Some good stuff on that amongst the songs from the old radio-dio-dio-do.

Last August when "back hame" in Glasgow, I saw PJ Scott's LP for THE LONG DUEL in a second-hand record shop. That was like a blast from the past. I had a tingle up my spine like in the olden days of yore, just holding it in my hands and looking at it. Unfortunately had to leave it behind as it would 'av got broke in me hand luggage oan the plane back tae Spain.

And there are actually a couple different versions on LP. The Italian release that was coupled with four tracks from Chico Hamilton's Repulsion has different tracks and program order than the Roulette release.
