I attended the earlier "Dear Friends" concert series (back when it was a unique enough event that Uematsu himself was in attendance) and was quite pleased with it. The live aspect definitely goes a long way toward overcoming occasionally naff orchestral arrangements. As for Distant Worlds, I have the multidisc "Returning Home" set and I listen to it occasionally. Most of the music is pretty well orchestrated, but some of the pieces that were more electronic than orchestral in their conception don't fare as well as they might (like "JENOVA") and sometimes the arrangers go pretty far afield from the original composition to pad its length ("Don't Be Afraid," "JENOVA"). I'm a believer in sticking to the original composition, loop points and all, admittedly. That said, some of the arrangements are dynamite, especially from FFXIV, which is a rancid game but has some terrific arrangements ("Navigator's Glory" in particular) that really stand out. It's also the only legitimate source for "Answers" from the same game. Quibbles include: Too much Hamauzu and FFXIII (it was new-ish at the time, I suppose). Annoying applause and crowd noises at the end of each track. No FFXII. Bottom line: go to the concert if you can, buy the disc after listening to samples.
