Happy birthday, John! Half of my music library has your name on it. I'll never forget how hearing the finale from "The Empire Strikes Back" for the first time kept me superglued to my seat until the last note played. I went back to see it a dozen times that summer---partially because it's a great flick, but also because I had to hear that score again. "Empire" was the first soundtrack I ever bought, and I played it to death. But actively listening to it in the theatre with all the visuals and sound effects swirling around it was just amazing. I don't think I've ever dived into learning about a subject as quickly and completely as I did film music. "Empire" did it for me. John Williams did it for me. He had me at Darth Vader's theme. That he's 81 and still producing masterpieces---and not just for movies---is a real gift. I can't wait to see what he has planned for the second half of his life. -

The word genius is bandied about so much and the when the words the greatest and the best is routinely tossed at you it eventually must lose it's meaning and even get depressing for composer greats because they know more or less what they have done and their position in music history. So the best they can do is give a polite "thank you" or admire the young naive passion that their fans exude. Williams here in America, as Morricone is elsewhere, is a rockstar, and that type of worship can get tiring. So on your 81st let me thank you for what makes you truly great to me. After so many years of being in such a high position in film music you have always focussed totally on the job before you. Getting on the inside of a film and finding it's voice through your knowledge, techniques, tricks and your transcendant muse. You stumble, struggle and somehow always come through with something that expands what is seen onscreen and hits emotional chords as well as musical ones. And, of course, there are the special moments when everything comes together so perfectly that film and music are no longer separate but all-of-a-piece and you have indeed created something wholly original. To have not an average career of a simple arc, but a number of arcs spanning decade after decade is so very rare. Thank you for all that. Thank you for demanding so much of yourself, and the hard work that gives you and us so much satisfaction!
