Amazon's Blu-ray Gold Box Deal of the Day affects the Farscape: The Complete Series bundle.

A&E Networks Home Entertainment's set collects all four seasons of creator Rockne S. O'Bannon's beloved cult science-fiction series.

The Gold Box deal presents the twenty-disc package at a 53% markdown from its SRP of $149.99; it offers 1080p encodes and 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio tracks alongside many special features, such as vintage and current behind-the-scenes featurettes, interviews with cast and crew, deleted scenes, television promos, and audio commentaries on selected episodes.

Through June 8th, Amazon is offering Farscape: The Complete Series on Blu-ray for $69.99.

Farscape in Blu-ray? Oh I must get my hands on a blu-ray player.

I just read that the film negatives to Farscape are lost (in what would be one of the most shocking archive incidents of the modern era) and the blu-rays are just up-rezes of SD material. Anyone know if that is true?

Farscape used a lot of CGI. Would any of that have been produced in 1080 10-some yrs ago?

I just ran a few of my SD discs through my BR player to see how they up-rez at home. The first three seasons stand up OK, but season 4 and The Peacekeeper Wars (both shot in widescreen) are a bit ragged.

('The Black Hole' looks quite good for being up-rezzed.)

Not worth it, really, unless you can't get hold of the PAL DVDs at a cheaper price.

First off, it doesn't include the ending mini-series 'The Peacekeeper Wars'.

Secondly, it's just an upscale of the PAL DVD masters (see above). I stand to be corrected, but though on the internet I've seen talk of the original film elements being lost, I don't think that's necessarily true. What I believe is true is that all the effects were done in PAL standard definition, and the cost of re-doing all the effects work could not possibly be recovered through sales (unlike the reworking that's being done for the various Star Trek series). So the option to do the upscale from the PAL originals was taken.

I have the entire series on PAL DVD, and the upscale via my PS3 to 1080p seems to be fine for all of the series, including season 4 and 'Peacekeeper Wars'. Having said that, my TV is only a 37 inch one, so it may be that much larger HD screens might show up artefacts more.
