Season 3 of Downton Abbey is the best music for film or tv this year bar none.

I wonder what the prospects are for a release. I don't believe there's been an album for series two.

Yes, the cricket match had some great music. They seem to take a library approach to the series with a few new pieces of music each season but a lot of repeated cues. Warm and elegant stuff though.

I noticed far less (if any) repeated library music in the first season, some in the second, and IMO it's incredibly noticeable all the way through the third season; a little less subtly done. Still, it's wonderful music and I'd love an album with everything recorded for the show!

It's all custom scored, actually, but there is definitely repetition of (a lot of) material.

Well, I noticed so much repetition in season 3 that I could've sworn there was tracked stuff...

Had missed this. When I bought the original soundtrack I was knocked out by it and felt that, conceptually, it was one of the finest soundtracks for a TV production I had ever heard, although I always skipped the few songs, which I felt spoiled the mood of John Lunn's beautiful music (and I'm not referring to the song or the vocalise to his principal melody). When the "Essential Collection" CD was released a year or so later I was torn, because I could see that I already had about 75% of the music, which is ported over from the original soundtrack. But there were enough different cues that I bought it anyway. When it arrived, my initial reaction was: Why did I bother? But on subsequent playings it grew on me. I still feel that the original soundtrack is all one needs, but if you just HAVE to have every possible second of music that is out there, then buy it. And I have no problem with them using much of the same music from season to season -- it provides a continuity as well as a sort of a security blanket, much as Daniel Licht's music for "Dexter" did the same (and worked perfectly) for 8 seasons of that quirky drama. But for anyone contemplating buying just one of the soundtracks, definitely get the original and not the "Essential."

Incidentally, have any other "Downton Abbey" fans noticed that too often the music practically disappears? I watch it on my complete Blu-ray collection on large surround speakers, and feel that they do composer John Lunn a disservice by playing so much of the music at such a low level. When I bought the original soundtrack and was able to play it loudly, I was amazed at the beauty of it, which is sometimes very hard to tell while watching the program.

Ron,

I just got into this amazing music and noticed the same thing you did about the two cd releases. Is the second cd worth buying to obtain that 25% additional music? I've got the first cd and wanted to know if the other cues had any standout/must have moments.

Any further thoughts would be great.
