CHINA BEACH IS AVAILABLE
EXCLUSIVELY ONLINE AT
CHINABEACHONDVD.COM

FAIRFAX, VA, February 26, 2013 - Beginning with the unforgettable title sequence theme song, "Reflections" by Diana Ross & the Supremes, one of the hallmarks of China Beach, the groundbreaking ABC-TV series, was the use of music - iconic, emotional music from the '60s and '70s featuring everyone from Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, to Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder and dozens of other popular performers. It's this music, in fact, that has prevented China Beach from being released at all.

"China Beach was long seen by many as unreleasable because of the clearing of so many rights," said Jeffrey Peisch, VP of Entertainment Marketing for Star Vista Entertainment/Time Life. "However, the show's fanatical fan base and its standing as one of the greatest TV series to never be released on any format, made us recognize that the time and expense spent on clearing the music was well worth the effort."

Gord Lacey, founder of TVShowsonDVD.com, said, "When we launched the site in 2001, China Beach was, from the very beginning, one of the most requested unreleased programs on DVD. Fans will be thrilled to know that the music that made the series so memorable will be nearly intact on the DVD set."

StarVista Entertainment/Time Life spent well over a year clearing the rights to hundreds of copyrights so that the DVD collection would be released with nearly all of the original classic rock and soul music songs from the original broadcasts. The 302 cleared songs featured throughout the series include "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, "Nowhere to Run" by Martha and the Vandellas, "Baby, I Need Your Loving" by the Four Tops, "My Girl" by the Temptations, "I Got You (I Feel Good)" by James Brown, Manfred Mann's "Do Wah Diddy Diddy," "Brown-Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison, "Piece Of My Heart" by Janis Joplin, Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe," "Respect" by Aretha Franklin and many more.

For the very first time on any format, CHINA BEACH: THE COMPLETE SERIES is being offered as a 21-disc collector's set featuring all 62 episodes and over ten hours of exclusive, never-before-seen bonus features including a recent cast reunion, extensive interviews with Dana Delany, Marg Helgenberger, series co-creator and executive producer John Sacret Young and writer/producer John Wells, original featurettes, as well as "Tales from the Five & Dime," a collectible memory book containing casting notes, rare, archival photos, emotional, heartfelt letters from Vietnam veterans and more. CHINA BEACH: THE COMPLETE SERIES will initially be available exclusively online, available for pre-order at ChinaBeachOnDVD.com for $199.95. For the China Beach aficionados who've patiently awaited the release of the series, StarVista Entertainment/Time Life has also created CHINA BEACH: THE COMPLETE SERIES - 25TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTOR'S EDITION. Priced at $274.95, the unique set includes three original, complete scripts, with reproduced covers sporting autographs from the entire cast and key production personnel. Also included will be five 8" x 10" color photographs of the original China Beach cast and the recent reunion, suitable for framing.

Following in the footsteps of critically acclaimed and best-selling Time Life DVD sets of THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW and THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, CHINA BEACH - with its Emmy-winning ensemble, powerful writing and evocative, timeless music - is certain to find a long-awaited DVD home with fans both old and new. Following the exclusive online release, the set will make its retail debut during Q3 2013.

Some TV critic thought that this show should have been called "Who Did You Do in the War, Daddy?"

I've never really seen the show (although my parents were big fans), but seeing this massive undertaking pulled off gives me some hope that the same could be done for The Wonder Years.

I've never really seen the show (although my parents were big fans), but seeing this massive undertaking pulled off gives me some hope that the same could be done for The Wonder Years.

That's probably unlikely. Fox (the home video rights holders) would never shell out the money to cover the music rights (unlike Warner Bros., who believe it or not holds the rerun rights).

Yesterday we reported that StarVista Entertainment (formerly Time Life Entertainment) has scheduled an individual release of China Beach - Season 1 on DVD for October 1st, according to an Amazon.com pre-order listing. Since then that listing has been removed; we're told it was prematurely added to the big e-tailer and that the studio wasn't ready to accept pre-orders quite yet. It will be re-listed at Amazon once the item is formally announced.

In the meantime, our contacts at StarVista/TimeLife have cleared up one thing for us about the separate season set: it will be a 3-DVD package, just like the way Season 1 is found inside the Complete Collection already sold at TimeLife.com: there will be two discs with all the episodes from the short first season, and a bonus disc that includes Featurettes "How it All Began" and the "Highlights From the 25th Anniversary Cast Reunion." So all of that will be available at retail.

However, what we are told will NEVER be available with the season set releases are the final 2 DVDs from the 21-disc Complete Collection set. Those two discs have the full range of extras from the 25th Anniversary Reunion (in L.A. on December 12, 2012). These consist of the "Reflections" Featurette; Discussions on "Origins," "The Legacy," and "China Beach and the Vietnam War"; Interviews (Michael Boatman, Brian Wimmer, Jeff Kober, John Sacret Young, Nancy Giles, Concetta Tomei, Troy Evans, and Chloe Webb); and Speeches of Cast and Crew Recollections. To get those two discs filled with the wonderful look-back that fans will truly want to own, and to enjoy the entire run of the show right now, you can order the complete series set. Don't forget that a plan is available there to allow you pay in installments!

But if you still prefer the season sets, StarVista will accommodate you so please stay tuned for the formal announcement.

Then, in April, retail stores received an individual general release of China Beach - Season 1 on DVD. Now the studio is gearing up to put out China Beach - Season 2 separately as well. We're expecting it on January 7th, at $29.95 SRP. We are expecting StarVista's formal press release at any time now, so stay tuned and we'll bring you that with all the formal details, plus cover art as well.

I never got hooked on the series, although during its run I kind of stumbled over some random episodes, and they all seemed very good to me. I found myself quite moved by a later episode, perhaps the one that ended the series, where they played this nostalgic duet version of "Thanks For The Memories" with Bob Hope and Shirley Ross from the film "The Big Broadcast of 1938." My beach pal Sue Terry was on Bob Hope's private little staff, and I tried to get her to find it for me, and although she sent me a big box of VHS tapes and CDs (including a solo music CD from Hope's wife), that version of "Thanks For The Memories" wasn't among them. A few years later I finally found it on a Bob Hope compilation CD at the now gone Tower Records on the Sunset Strip, and have always loved it. Would love to see some of "China Beach" now, so many years later.

HIT "THE BEACH" FOR THE EMMY AWARD-WINNING SECOND
SEASON OF THE ACCLAIMED, FAN-FAVORITE SERIES THAT
DELIVERED A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE ON THE VIETNAM WAR

CHINA BEACH:
THE COMPLETE SEASON TWO

Street Date: January 7, 2014

This January, StarVista/Time Life invites viewing audiences to revisit the 510th Evacuation Hospital and R&R center (otherwise known as the "Five and Dime") with CHINA BEACH: THE COMPLETE SEASON TWO. Capturing all 17 episodes from the award-winning 1989 season - including the landmark "Vets," featuring moving interviews of real-life veterans intercut with scenes from the show and "Tet '68," which TV Guide hailed as #87 on its "100 Greatest TV Episodes of All Time" List - plus substantial bonus features, the five DVD set will be available on January 7 for $29.95.

Inspired by the real-life experiences of women and men who served at China Beach - part EVAC Hospital, part USO entertainment center, with a backdrop of the iconic music of the era - Dionne Warwick, The Righteous Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Chuck Berry, The Mamas & the Papas, Paul Anka, Jefferson Airplane and many more - CHINA BEACH: THE COMPLETE SEASON TWO transports viewers to a very distinct time and place, where unforgettable, compelling and poignant stories unfolded. Along with the lauded ensemble cast, which featured Army nurse Colleen McMurphy (Dana Delany), Red Cross worker Cherry White (Nan Woods), and civilian worker K.C. Koloski (Marg Helgenberger), THE COMPLETE SEASON TWO also featured talented guest stars including Oscar winner Kathy Bates ("American Horror Story," "Harry's Law," Misery), Oscar nominated Kevin McCarthy (Death of a Salesman, Innerspace) and Dennis Farina ("Law and Order," Midnight Run). Nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards, the show captured "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series" for Dana Delany.

The two-part season two opener, "Lost and Found," welcomes journalist wannabe Wayloo Marie Holmes (Megan Gallagher), who immediately and embarrassingly has her derrière dotted with shrapnel, and finds by-the-book Pvt. Frankie Bunsen (Nancy Giles) throwing reason out the window as she performs with a young, white soldier who convinces her that he's Chuck Berry. Throughout, the season deals with race riots following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., the Tet Offensive, POWs, desertion, and the heart-shattering loss of one of their own, cut down by the straight, clean shot of a lone sniper. The season highlights include "Vets," a groundbreaking episode that made television history and became a centerpiece of the series, offering moving interviews of real-life veterans intercut with scenes from the show, as well as "Tet '68," in which Dr. Richard (Robert Picardo) and Dodger (Jeff Kober) defend the hospital during the Tet Offensive. The season concludes with McMurphy leaving the steamy wilds of 'Nam for the flat plains of Kansas in "The World."

ABOUT CHINA BEACH
In an era of testosterone-driven Vietnam movies such as Platoon, China Beach, created by award-winning journalist and Vietnam vet William Broyles, Jr. and John Sacret Young, delivered the war from a unique perspective: that of the women, military personnel and civilians who were present during the conflict. Set in the Vietnam locale of China Beach, at the "Five and Dime," also known as the 510th Evacuation Hospital and R&R center, the cast was made up of US Army doctors and nurses, officers, soldiers, Red Cross volunteers and civilian personnel, either on leave or at the end of their tour of duty. Many episodes and story lines were based on real-life stories of those who served, stories brought to rich life by a supremely talented ensemble cast featuring many actors beginning to make their marks on the industry, including Dana Delany (First Lieutenant/Captain Nurse Colleen McMurphy), Marg Helgenberger (K.C. Kolowski), Michael Boatman (SP4 Sam Beckett), Robert Picardo (Captain Dr. Dick Richard) and Ricki Lake (Holly Pelegrino). The other side of the camera boasted such accomplished talents as multiple Emmy Award-nominee series co-creator & executive producer John Sacret Young and co-executive producer John Wells, who would go on to executive produce "ER" and "The West Wing." A critically-acclaimed fan favorite during its four year run (1988-1992), the highly touted show and its cast were the recipients of numerous industry accolades and awards including one Golden Globe for Best Drama (1990), two Best Actress Emmy Awards for Dana Delany (1989, 1992), a Best Supporting Actress award for Marg Helgenberger (1990), a People's Choice Award for "Favorite New Dramatic TV Program" (1989), a prestigious Peabody Award, a Humanitas prize, a Writers Guild award, and 29 Emmy Award nominations in total.

I just ordered the 21-disc box from Time-Life's website. It's on clearance now and I guess it goes away at some point. So I'm gambling that it won't be replaced with an HD blu-ray set, but my sense is that that is not happening.

Anyway, it's $99.98 now, which is half the price it was released for in 2013. I feel like I've held out long enough. Can't wait for it to arrive.

Also, I'll just take a moment to acknowledge that Ron Hardcastle is still missed around here.
