A friend of mine and I remarked the other day, that in this golden age of film score releases, where our "Holy Grail" list is shrinking daily, the one soundtrack release we are truly clamoring for is Joel Goldsmith's incredible, beautiful and exciting music for the short lived Stargate Universe (SGU) series. With the tragic passing of Joel, I figured any new releases were shelved indefinitely, as he was directly involved in the production of his CD releases.

However, I figured I'd ask if there was any news/chance of Joel's SGU scores getting a release.

Perhaps Ford Thaxton could chime in here.

In the meantime...here's an absolutely wonderful track (SPOILERS):

Great series -- the only one in the STARGATE universe that I like (except for the original movie). Superb music too, especially the Vangelis vibe.

I think a soundtrack release of this would be a great tribute to the late Goldsmith jr.

I am hoping for this Cd to. I had seen some of the Stargate television series, but never Universe. I have since been watching the other Stargate TV series and great music, so I have also bought what CDs are available. If Universe is anything like others, please release. Job for La-La Land with a box set!

Hang on, hang on... there's such a thing as "audience demand," of which there's been plenty for Star Trek and The X-Files, but not so much for the Stargate series (otherwise Milan, GNP Crescendo and Varese Sarabande would have surely released other Stargate discs).

Thor and Kim Tong, I, naturally, agree with you both! Thor, I too preferred SGU over the other Stargate series.

CindyLover, don't worry! The machine that makes soundtracks can do more than one at a time. ;-)

But is there no one else? Does no one have any information on this potential soundtrack release? Where is Ford Thaxton? Doesn't he have his ear to ground on these types of releases?
Perhaps CindyLover is right. There is minimal interest. That's too bad. The music is truly superb! I would have thought that a Joel Goldsmith science fiction score would be something of note around here. Alas...

Universe is by far my favorite Stargate series, but my least favorite Stargate score. The music was more atmospheric in nature. Might have worked well in context of the show, but it's not something I would listen too on its own.

Solium, I agree, much of it was very atmospheric. I happen to enjoy that though. :-) However, there was a lot of exciting action music as well!

Does the music below do nothing for you (especially at the 3:56 mark)?

@ solarwnz - Nice music. I actually like the first half better. wink But 70 minutes of this kinda of music is too much for me. Makes me sad the series prematurely ended though.

I'd buy this in a second if there was a release.

This you say concerns me. I like Stargate : Atlantis scores better that Stargate SG-1. Bigger scoring. If Universe is "more atomspheric" do not know if I will like. I just started Season 3 of Stargate : Atlantis. The one CD of Stargate : Atlantis is not enough.

If you like thematic scoring like me, this is how I would rate the scores:

(1) Stargate (Film Score)
(2) Stargate Continuum & Stargate: The Ark of Truth (Direct Videos)
(3) Stargate: Atlantis (Television Series)
(4) Best Of Stargate S G - 1 (Television Series)
(5) Stargate SG-1 (Television Series)
(6) Stargate Universe (Television Series/Not Released)

My list is close to your, except I do not know when I would put Stargate (film score) and I would put the 2 ST SG1 CDs together. I guess I try to rate Joel Goldsmiths music. I know the ST SG1 theme is Arnolds, but Goldsmith has made it work into many places in his scores. I was totally amazed at his scores to Stargate: The Ark of Truth & Stargate Continuum with his use of choir, which he has included in Stargate : Atlantis theme. I have to hear Universe to make opinion, but not looking good in your list.

I am 3/4 way through first season and I see why series was discontinued. To me this is the weakest STARGATE series and my least favorite Joel Goldsmith scores. Will finish first season and think about if worth time to watch final season. Solium said the music was more atmospheric in nature, I understand that they are in space most of time, but the score is just dull and does not interest me like the other STARGATE series. Just average electronic score. Do not think I would purchase CD of SG-U if it was released.

That's interesting, because I have the exact opposite reaction. I don't care for any of the other STARGATE shows, but loved this one. I also think it's Goldsmith's best score that I've heard.

You must not heard many Joel Goldsmith scores.

First season was weak and had its issues. While not all issues were corrected, (They needed to toss those magical spirit jumping stones for good) the second season really found it's legs. Characters are far more developed, (the wiz tech kid grows up a lot) and there were a lot of interesting interplay between the entire cast. The acting was intense, and all around outstanding. Edit: I'll go as far as to say the acting was better than almost anything on regular television at the time.

Not all of them, but some: MOON 44, KULL, SHILOH and HELEN OF TROY. I prefer S:U over all of them. He doesn't have a lot of soundtracks out.

The inherent problem with SG:U was that the first season was trying to crib the tone of the Battlestar Galactica reboot. Not only did it not do this very well but in the process distanced long-time SG fans in the process.

They started getting back on track with the later episodes but by then it was too late.

I don't remember Joel's material from SG:U at all but I tend to like his work a lot, so I'd give this a whirl too.

Absolutely agree with this post. I really think given another season they would have excelled. Lack of patience with the show to let it evolve and improve (which it did, massively) coupled with Syfy's stupidity as a network spelled death for the show.

The music was not as memorable at first and I have to say I was disappointed with the minimalist approach, but as time went on it grew on me and Joel seemed to do much more with it. That sequence from Light (I think?) where the ship does the sun flyby was the first sequence which really wowed me with the score.
