Wow, have always loved Spence's stuff. Powerful, dynamic, clever stuff! Always heard Steve Sabol was a good guy. Honorable and all. Disappointing to hear otherwise. I don't like charlatans and liars.

Incredible, isn't it? It is hard to believe film composers still have to put up with these things today.

Does someone want to summarize the main point of the referenced article?

The previous comments suggest a Steve Sabol was dishonorable, somehow relating to Sam Spence. I also admittedly have no idea who Steve Sabol is.

Very sad.
Since as long as i can remember, unscrupulous operators like Sabol have coveted the publishing rights of creative people. Spence is one of countless victims of this type of fraud.

I am especially disappointed that Sabol resorted to this low behavior.
Maybe, being a Jew , he wanted to exact "revenge" on the Germans?
Pretty pathetic of him.

Once again,

WHAT IS GOING ON? I can't find anything relevant with a google search of "sam spence steve sabol". How has FSM Online broke major news that seriously negatively effects Sam Spence (whose music is awesome, having heard it performed live by GSPO), but no other news outlets seem to have any information on this at all.

WHAT IS GOING ON?

In the 1970s, NFL Films acquired (i.e. stole) the rights to the music Sam Spence created for them in a very unethical way. They're now sucking up a very large part of the royalties earned on the music.

Steve Sabol was co-founder and president of NFL Films until he died of brain cancer last year. Ed Sabol, Steve's father, was the other co-founder and served as president of the company until about a decade ago. Ed was apparently the driving force behind the unscrupulous tactics to steal Spence's music in the '70s. More recently, Spence queried Steve about where his royalties were, given sales of his music on iTunes, plus regular licensing for commercials and video games. Steve didn't do much more than shrug and told Spence to talk to the publishing company. Some lawyers have estimated Spence could recover $15 million by suing, while others say he doesn't have a case. Spence isn't interested in litigating.

I assume you are referring to Steve Sabol?
People who engage in immoral and unethical behavior often justify it by saying the victim deserved it.
MY sardonic (and rhretorical) comment was not meant to be taken literally.

This news has been made available for the first time on FSM Online. That is why it isn't available anywhere else as of yet. But people have already made a good summary of the case on this thread.

Wait until the NFL season starts along with its countless commercials and shows with Spence's music. It will hurt even more.

More pathetic than accusing someone of racist motives without a SHRED of evidence?

"Maybe, being a Jew . . ."

What garbage.

You're a joke, Marshall. Welcome to my ignore list.

If what has been mentioned in this thread is true, that's incredibly unfortunate. His music was awesome. Still, I think it's pretty pathetic something this major, and heartbreaking, is only to be found in a subscription publication of a tiny niche. Even if FSM wants to be the first to break the scoop, you'd think a free FSM Daily article would generate far more press and sympathy towards the situation. Maybe the major media would cover it and force the NFL to do something to make good on the situation.

One would think that fans of NFL Films and it's music go far beyond those who subscribe to FSM online (or even FSM message board).

Regardless, what a horrible situation for Sam Spence.

The truth is, we are actually lucky Sam decided to break his silence. The composer told me this story three years ago and told me to keep it private - until now. Knowing him, he is probably more comfortable about the story first being published on a smaller scale magazine.
But I am sure that if he wants more to come out of it, he will take the necessary action. Just wait and see.

I don't know the specifics, not being an FSM Online subscriber. But if what I'm gathering from this thread is accurate, I'm sorry to say that this is major only for the parties involved. This sort of abuse is sadly common. Major media will not cover this sort of thing, nor would wider coverage shame the NFL into action.

That's a shame, especially when some rookie newscaster has been on all the national TV shows just for getting fired for accidentally cursing on air.

Crazy world we live in. smile

TO MR MARSHALL-Whatever anyone is, what there background is, religion, ethnic, you name it, that was the worst statement I ever heard on this board. If a strong point has to be made on some issue, have a point behind it.I always do. Why be crude, just to be crude?
