I was wondering if this would qualify for an official release someday of an expanded score (maybe 2cd) of this wonderful music (I am referring to the 80s TV series of course). Now, there was an album that also included some narrations by Ron Perlman, and there are some pieces in the Holdridge's promo, and Don Davis' Hyperspace soundtrack.
It would be great if there was a cd, with the music alone (without any narrations!), gathered from all these sources, and possibly with some additional pieces..
Considering the fact that the series had 56 episodes in total and each one of them (according to Holdridge himself) had about 25 minutes of music, it would take a mega-box of some 20 CDs to accomodate all of this great composer's work for BATB!

Going by memory, Holdridge scored a handful of episodes in the first season - the pilot and maybe three or four others? William Ross did another four according to an above post. The rest are Don Davis who really did a knock out job on this series.
I don't know if we need every note of every episode but I think there is more than enough great music to get a new 2 or even 3 CD set from.

Well, I tried to be more realistic! Apparently, not any series would get the love of a multi box cd unless it's something iconic as Star Trek.
By the way, did every episode had new music composed for it? Weren't there any tracked music pieces from earlier episodes? I would guess so, but maybe it isn't so.
I've got the "Of Love and Hope" CD and the first season on DVD. Good music!
Sometime ago, Blurays were going to be released, but apparently the project was cancelled! I would buy these too without second thought. This is one of my favourite series, if not THE favourite.
I like what I've heard of the music for this series, but I can't really understand the love for the series itself. I love Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton is kinda hot...and George R.R. Martin worked on the series, so I should love it. I'd heard very mixed things about the show but kinda dismissed them in favor of all the good things I've heard. However, I tried the first two episodes and I thought they were horrible. Painfully bad. Then I went to YouTube and ran across this fan-made compilation:
The same poster made one twice as long for season 2. Is there really a lot more to this series? Are there amazing Martin moments or something (I do remember him complaining that far to often they had to do the same thing in the series, over and over)? I just don't get it, and that's coming from someone who watches Sailor Moon and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic with his wife and enjoys himself thoroughly...so you'd think I'd have a high tolerance. LeHah, our tastes seem to be pretty similar on a lot of things so maybe you can enlighten me. As a self-described curmudgeon I'm surprised you're a fan based on the two episodes I've seen.

LeHah, you're absolutely right - Don Davis had the lion's share of BATB's scoring with 46 episodes.

Yavar, I am not sure how I would feel if i watched the series now. But this is part of my childhood, so I guess part of my love for it is due to the nostalgia too. You say you watched the first 2 episodes.. I think with every series, and maybe with this too, it gets better as we go further. I saw part of the pilot too recently, and I felt it had some akward moments, but from what I remember later on, it was a great series..
the undisputed fact is that it had great atmospere, sets, photography in the undergound world, and of course music. Maybe it's more suited to our world as it was 20 years ago -more innocent and romantic-, and not now? I don't know.. I myself love those times, and I have a problem now watching new series and new movies.

Like all things, the show is a product of its time. If you weren't around then, the odds get longer on your enjoyment. Similarly, in ten years, we'll be making fun of everything from the early 2000s.
It was a romantic show for a specific audience (namely women). Television was still network-only in 1987, so writers could only do so much (and whos to say what network notes said back then!).
George RR Martin was script supervisor which can mean a lot of things (I've seen it occasionally used as the same thing as a "Associate Producer" title, which is a "Thank You" and not an actual job description) but he was likely the one to just polish the scripts from the writers room. I can't say how much of himself is in the final product (After finding his own novels having a serious fetishization of rape , I chucked that book straight into the trash) but the show was rife with internal struggles (the creator was known for being slightly eccentric and was eventually marginalized as time went on) despite winning a couple of awards. It only failed in the third season when Hamilton left due to an unexpected(?) pregnancy. They tried to darken the show a great deal to attract a more male demographic but the show sank like a freaking rock.
Basically, if you can't watch the show for Ron Perlman's acting, it ain't for you. Its definitely an unusual creature in hindsight but, hey, in the same amount of time, we'll be laughing at Lost and Walking Dead and Battlestar reboots, I'm sure.
It's funny you should mention about the 3rd season! As much as I loved the show very much, i only saw 2-3 episodes of this season, and then left it.. I hope i will watch again the complete series till the end, but yes, it's agreed by many that the final season wasn't as good as the others.

The third season became very interesting as it went on. It was trying to force a new character into the old dynamic and you can tell the writers were having a tough time with it, despite finding the right tone for Vincent. It would've been really interesting to see where they went with it. Theres one or two good episodes that season and McHattie as the bad guy is terrific. (Also: a scene-chewing Lance Henriksen makes an appearance as an assassin)
We don't have netflix here. I waited for a possible Bluray release, but as it turns out, there won't be any (I asked the distributors). So I may buy the DVDs some day..

The show was shot on film and edited on tape - much like Star Trek TNG. But unlike TNG, this show has no massive fanbase. The DVDs aren't bad but the pilot is incredibly "soft" and full of dust; I'm wondering if its not a second gen copy after not finding the master?
I don't know where you are but the show's 3 season set goes on sale a couple times a year from what I've seen. Keep your eyes open.
