As a tribute to the great FSM Message Board posts by Recordman in which he shared so many wonderful and obscure soundtrack LP covers, we are running a series of posts on another often-overlooked aspect of film music collecting, sheet music.

We continue our series of sheet music covers with the works of HENRY MANCINI.

Previous posts have featured:

We would appreciate any additions to sheet music by HENRY MANCINI not included in this post.

You are missing a MANCINI BOOK here, don't kno the correct title but i belive it's Orchestration with Henry Mancini

Although they're not necessarily "sheet music", there are 2 books.
One is the orchestration book "Sounds and Scores", the other is "Case History Of A Film Score:
The Thorn Birds" of which I am the editor.
I have sheet music on a couple of other Mancini compositions. One is a vocal version of "Baby Elephant Walk" with a lyric by Hal David, recorded by Pat Boone. Others are "Dreamsville", "Me, Natalie" "The Glass Menagerie", and a couple more I can't think of off the top of my head.

...the other is "Case History Of A Film Score: The Thorn Birds" of which I am the editor.

...which includes a CD of "The Thorn Birds" raw recording sessions. in particular the main title with the dulcimer (missing from the Varese release). I took that track and isolated the dulcimer sections and overlayed them onto the Varese main title tracks, and obtained a perfect match. I fact the same dulcimer overlay can be placed onto Varese's track 3, "Drogheda" (which also had the dulcimer missing) -- again a perfect match.

One is a vocal version of "Baby Elephant Walk" with a lyric by Hal David, recorded by Pat Boone.

After the Varese released the CDs, without the dulcimer, I called them, explained who I was and my connection with the book. They had a very ho-hum, "that's the way it goes" attitude. I was very disappointed. After years (since 1984) of labels trying to get this released, Varese really dropped the ball. After all, it's the MELODY for heaven's sake.

You can bet if it was a Goldsmith release, they would have recalled it.

The Love Theme From "The Glenn Miller Story" was also known as "So Little Time". And I believe that Larry Shayne was Mancini's publishing partner (note the credit on "What Did You Do In The War, Daddy?"), until they got into a dispute involving royalties which broke up the partnership.

Actually the title is "Too Little Time". Lyric by Don Raye. It is beautifully played by Dick Nash on Mancini's "Our Man In Hollywood" album. I have a very nice vocal version by the Anita Kerr Singers on their "We Dig Mancini" album.

Somehow my name is on this post. I goofed somehow.

Interesting: When Monica Mancini recorded her father's theme from MOLLY MAGUIRES, it was called "Music on the Way" with lyrics by Will Jennings.

http://www.amazon.com/Monica-Mancini/dp/B00000F1D5

I'd love to hear PF Webster's version.

Maybe this means there's an alternate (and maybe better!) lyric for the love theme from THE THORN BIRDS, too. (Sample above also).

I would love to learn "Loss of Love". I can remember picking out the tune on a piano in high school, so much I wanted to hear it on my own.

It's one of my favorite Mancini themes, along with the other themes from that score.

I wonder if the Carlotta theme from WC FIELDS AND ME ever got turned into sheet music. It was awfully nice.

That, and that rapturous pre-title theme from A SHOT IN THE DARK.

The opening song in ASITD is titled "The Shadows Of Paris" and yes, it was once available in print. I think Robert Wells wrote the lyric.
Not sure about the Carlotta theme.

Also, Now that the sheet music has been unearthed for so many unusual film scores and songs, we have decided to bring in a professional pianist and a few vocalists to plow through the pile and play through a bunch of them.

AND WE WANT YOU TO PICK THE PLAYLIST!

Over the next few weeks look over the sheet music posted by Sheetmusicman and post to this thread http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=97750&forumID=1&archive=0
which titles you would like performed. Want to hear the vocal version of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE? Let us know. Want to hear the piano solo of RUNAWAY? Now's your chance.

We will be recording and filming as many pieces as we can and then post them on YouTube in the next month or so.

Here is a link to a checklist to find what is currently available to choose from listed by composer.

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=96853&forumID=1&archive=0

This should be fun. Hope you enjoy.
