The epic spectacle CLEOPATRA starring Elizabeth Taylor and winner of four Academy Awards returns to theaters in a 50th anniversary restoration with a running time of approx. 251 minutes. It will be showing at Cinemark and Regal theaters nationwide next Wednesday at 2 pm and 7 pm- also some theaters will screen it on Sunday the 26th.

If you have never seen this on the big screen or in this 4hr 11 minute version, this is certainly an event. CLEOPATRA was never reissued to theaters after its initial run in 1963-64 . Other epics such as BEN-HUR, SPARTACUS, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, etc. received multiple reissues but it has been 40 years plus since this played movie theaters. Though it isnt a great movie, it is fascinating and does contain some extraordinary elements - a classic Alex North score , incredible art and set direction, amazing costumes and beautiful cinematography. Rex Harrison won a Best Actor award for playing Julius Caesar from the National Board of Review and along with Roddy McDowell as Octavius shares the acting honors.

Sounds cool. But oh the length. I would hope to see this 4 hour + version released on DVD. Wonder if there are plans for it?

The Fox 50th Anniversary Blu-ray edition will be released May 28. But it’s been available (through Amazon and other outlets) since late January, 2012, with a different cover. Region free.

I have this one which says it's 192 minutes, not 251 minutes. Doug can you give me a link to the 4 hour DVD version? Thanks.

This film is definitely one of my biggest Guilty Pleasures!

Alex North's score is truly superb

and Roddy McDowall is so wonderful as Octavian.

"Cleopatra" is not a guilty pleasure. "The Swarm" is a guilty pleasure. "Cleopatra" is an EXCELLENT film!

I have the UK special edition DVD, which I've kept as I prefer the colour to the new Blu-ray, & on the back it says, aprox. feature run time: 248 minutes (I suppose that's with PAL speed up).

For me, this is wonderful news!
I shall phone my local Regal Cinema to learn if they will be showing it.
CLEOPATRA is among my very favorites, and I've only ever seen it on the home screen.

THANKS, philiperic, for the head's up!

Just found out it's being shown near me, and today's my day off!

So I shall be seeing the 7PM screening today!

REALLY looking forward to seeing this in a theatre again, probably for the last time....

(Must have seen it 6 or 7 times back when, during its first release, the first time during its first week in New York, at the Rivoli Theatre... That was something. Still have the souvenir program.)

Love to hear that gorgeous North score filling a theatre, too!

Just got back from seeing "Cleopatra" at the Edina Theater in Minneapolis. It looked great and the sound was wonderful. The projectionist goofed it up at the beginning and started part two instead of part one. And this was after giving an introduction from the front of the theater explaining about the overture and intermission. Otherwise the presentation was excellent. It's been years since I watched the film straight through (I often skip to favorites parts when I play the disc.) and I'm impressed with how well it plays. It really moves along! Didn't feel like four hours at all.

Well, I ended up not going....

Worked until 2 AM last night, didn't get to bed until around 3:30. Took a nap today, didn't wake up until 6:15. "Cleo" started at 7. Felt too groggy to want to spend over 4 hours in a darkened theatre.

Oh well.

Glad everyone else seemed to enjoy it.
