Just some random musings I felt like sharing on a lazy, summery Sunday afternoon here in Norway. One of the most rewarding and fascinating trends in the last 10 years for me has been the proliferation of film music festivals and events all around the world, especially in Europe and the US. This has opened up so many new avenues for me and finally allowed me to meet many composers and fans alike (from FSM and elsewhere). To illustrate, let me compare something I said back then to the situation now. On December 7, 2001, I wrote this: "Except for a couple of Norwegian composers, I've never met a single film composer in my life /.../ Might have something to do with the fact that I'm locked away in a "soundtrack developing country" in a darkened corner of Europe." From http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=5828&forumID=1&archive=1 And then as late as December 8, 2008, I wrote this: "I know that I'm a controversial character around here, but nothing would please me more than to meet some of my harshest critics/opponents in real life. Seriously. The divide between online persona and real-life person can be so vast sometimes that it would be THRILLING to meet these people in real life. Perhaps we would hit it off big time, who knows?". I then proceeded to list only three FSMers I had met at the time. From http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=55574&forumID=1&archive=0 Today, things are very different. I've attended film music events in Norway, Belgium, Poland, USA, England and others, some of them repeatedly. I've met and sometimes even interviewed composers like Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard, Elliot Goldenthal, Graeme Revell, Angelo Badalamenti, Marco Beltrami, Johan Söderqvist, Pino Donaggio and many others. I've been to a John Williams concert. I've met countless FSMers in both USA and Europe. I continue to meet fellow maintitles.net members almost every year (we're like a group of friends, really). In a few months, I will be seeing both James Horner and Danny Elfman live. If I'd known this when I posted that first quote 12 years ago, I wouldn't have believed it. In any case, I just wanted to thank everyone I've met on the board and I hope to meet more of you in the future (and meet some of you again that I've already met). I also still have a faint hope of meeting both Williams and Elfman. And I continue to monitor with great interest even those events I'm not able to partake in myself, like the recent GSPO/Varese concert. What is everyone's take on these events? Are you as enthusiastic about them as I am? Please share your thoughts.

On the academic side of things, there is an annual conference called Music and the Moving Image, which takes place in NYC and is actually coming up in less than two weeks now. Surprisingly, this will only be the eighth such conference, but will be my first time there. Since it's music and the moving image, it involves not just film music, but music for television, video games, the internet, etc. Should be a fun excuse to get to New York!

Unfortunately, leaving in Greece, I don't have any opportunity at all in that field (meeting film composers, attending film music concerts etc.) The only film composer I've seen is Trevor Jones. He came here last summer, held a concert, and also there was a meeting the next day with a kind of lecture by him and Q&A.

I was one of those sitting in awkward silence instead of responding to the question. But my story is too pathetic to reveal. And yet, as I've started... I think it must be brilliant for the majority. Yes, look at the contrast between Thor's first musings and what's on offer now. But here's the painfully personal bit - I live in Spain, so I COULD have got to Úbeda or Córdoba... but I don't feel the NEED to travel in order to enjoy the magic of film music. In fact, maybe it would destroy a little of the magic that's still left. I live inside my own head, and between my two earphones. That, plus the fact that very little about today's cinema or music ignites my passion. I'd rather spend the little money I have on something else, or just save it and go for a walk in the woods. Now, I WOULD love to meet you all in person! Come to my house for a beer! That would be great! Just as long as we don't mention film music please. At least I posted!
