This movie is head and shoulders above superhero crap like Iron Man 3, and I'm thankful that filmmakers like Joe Kosinski get bankrolled after their last filmed turned out to be financially successful and a cult continuation of a cult classic. You know who doesn't care that you didn't like TRON: Legacy and suspect it might have been a box office failure based on poor logic? FUCKING EVERYONE!
Thanks, nuts_sore … err …nuts_score! Like what you wrote (and others above who posted some good words about this film). For a while there it seemed like the "in" thing to do was to trash "Oblivion" (as well as past his prime Tom Cruise). Well, I streamed "Oblivion" as soon as I could and watched it twice in 2 days, and realized I would probably buy it on Blu-ray, which I did. Sure, it's another of the "post-apocalyptics," but I feel that it was done with wit and style and I was NEVER bored, never looked at my watch nor checked to see how much movie was left. I look at it as sci-fi with a heart, and every time I've watched it tears have been in my eyes at the end. And the special features showing how they made it are riveting! I hope it did well in other countries! And damn those uptight know-it-alls who mercilessly ripped it apart! I see most new movies, and this one was far better than many of them!

It's intelligent Sci-Fi (well, 99% of it is anyway) and the viewer needs a brain, therefore it was doomed as far as many "critics" and regular cinema goers were concerned. I thoroughly enjoyed it (it was spectacular in IMAX) - one of my favourite films of the year. Not quite as good as "Sharknado", but not far off...

I enjoyed it well enough, but will probably never watch it again: it was described by one friend as the "average of all science fiction movies," and that's not wrong. It's intelligent as far as cinematic sci-fi tends to go, maybe, but it's also less intelligent than, say, Moon, from which it borrows heavily. It looks great, but its great looks show us very familiar antiseptic sfscapes. Taken on its own it's decent, but I'm not sure there's any reason for me to return to it.

That could be said about a lot of actors, most notably Barbra Streisand and Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Redgrave, and let's not forget Jane Fonda. Or, for that matter, director Elia Kazan and producer Harvey Weinstein. I've always tried to separate my feelings about them as people (and what they've done or said) from their creations on film and stage and music. I agree that Cruise was terrific in the sometimes savaged "War of the Worlds" and totally bought into his character(s) in "Oblivion," which I like the more I see it, and the behind the scenes extras demonstrate the work it was to bring it so effectively to the screen. But I always hate it when people allow their dislike for specific artists to color how they view their creations.

I was going to wait until the Blu-ray was in the $10 area, but broke down and bought it for almost double that, which I added to another Amazon order to wipe out shipping charges, and don't regret it. As I've written, I like it more each time I see it. And the generous special features (not gargantuan but still better than many new releases) are fascinating -- I mention above how I just HAD to go back and watch some of the film again after seeing how they put this jigsaw puzzle together. I won't say I love it, but it never disappoints me.
Hours later, and I just accessed my copy of "Oblivion" from iTunes and watched about 25 minutes of it, and while it looked good on my 27" HD Mac screen, it isn't the same as when I watch the Blu-ray on my 55" Samsung with separate surround sound. But I sit a lot closer to the Mac screen. The nice thing about watching an iTunes digital copy, which was complimentary with purchase of the Blu-ray, is that if I see an image I want to keep, I can pause it and then do a "screen save" to save the image and then move it to my iPhoto.
