So that synth line and the anvil hits are on the Milan CD you say? Any other tracks that are different on the Milan CD as compared to the Intrada?

"Deleting The Evidence" on the Intrada CD has a different take than the Milan CD

How'S it different? Sure it's not just a different mix of the same recording?

Wow, keen ears!
I was thinking the same as Mink at first, but then I came to minute 4:22 where the Milan recording has sharper trumpet stabs than the Intrada track. And once again the Milan recording equals the film version. Maybe it's not an alternate take altogether, but rather a pick-up of that particular passage which was inserted into the existing recording later. That probably explains the difference in trombone performance at the end of "Ambush" (right where the anvil hits are missing), too.

I would say even earlier. At the 3:53 mark on the Milan track, the shakuhachi performance is the same as what one hears in the film; the Intrada track uses a different performance.

You're right! I think it's a couple of pan flutes though, regardless of what the booklet says. Makes you wonder if there are even more subtle difference between the other recordings.

Just got the set.

I have to say...
WTF is up with those AWFUL AWFUL DVD screenshots in the booklet?!? Is that what passes for high quality at this point?!?!
I'm sure there were hundreds of stills in Paramount's archives that they could have used but every page has a nasty screenshot, some small and some large.

I'm just floored.

Just wanted to note that "Truth Needs a Soldier / End Title" also seems to contain a couple of alternate takes (or the Milan version contains film version pick-ups), just like "Ambush" and "Deleting the Evidence" (as pointed out by Mink and others).

"Second Hand Copter" is an entirely alternate take, it seems.

The 'album' version of "Looking for Clues" is not the Milan album version. The Milan album version's last part has the pan flute part of the 'film version', while the shorter ending of the Intrada 'album version'.

It's a strange mess, that one. Bummer that with all of these alternate takes, they couldn't find a spot for that wild film insert in "The Ambush."

I'm thinking of picking this one up from Intrada. I have the existing Milan album, so is it possible to smack together a playlist from both albums that closely resembles the film version or is it all, seemingly, to messy?

Just use the album and add in the Don Davis stuff from the end and you should be all set, becsuse that's the only real reason to get the Intrada. Sub in the film version of the MT if you're dead set on it.

Don Davis material? Am I missing something?

Ordered and excited as hell to hear some "new" old school Horner action.

If you want "old school" try Wolfen.

I had no idea that the Intrada release featzred so many cues with different takes than the film takes. Glad I kept my Milan CD.

"Don Davis material? Am I missing something?"
-------------------------
What Shaun is getting at is this.
A lot of Horner scores from this period featured cues that may have been ghostwritten by his orchestrators, one of whom, Don Davis, has his own unique sound/style that can be quite easy to spot at times. The fact Davis included some of these cues on his promo CD's adds fuel to the fire. While he is working with Horner written material and also writing in a Horner-esque style, his own voice can still be heard within the cues.
Certainly Pagemaster, We're Back and A Far Off Place all contain tracks that sound very unfamiliar, esp if you are well acquainted with Horner's previous works.
