I I have this CD by Maazel & The Berliners called "The 'Ring' Without Words". It's brilliant and it works for me just fine.
Agreed. I have seen several performances of Wagner's "The Ring" cycle but the single CD "The Ring Without Words" is awe inspiring and brings out the majesty of Wagner above any of the others. If you didn't know what you were listening to it could easily pass by a newbie as an epic "Golden Age" soundtrack
I picked up this CD a number of years ago as well. A very well-sequenced recording of the instrumental excerpts from the operas. I can't really get thru a lot of Wagner's operas, most of them being 4 or 5 hours (and all recitative!), but this CD is sort of like the "soundtrack" from the operas -- dramatic score without the dialog!
As far as Jones' contribution to Excalibur, I still long for its release. It's not as impressive or expansive as The Dark Crystal, but there are some gems in that score, like the wedding cue, and the unused end credits (which Edel at least re-recorded in the 90s).

Was obsessed with this film on release. Saw it many times, even got the local cinema manager to give me three mini-posters he had advertising the film, along with his kindly sending for the actual UK quad poster.
Was devastated when I realised all we were getting instead of a decent soundtrack, was a compilation of the classical pieces used. Sorry folks, and I hated doing it, but I too acquired the unmentionable, which at least gave me the Jones tracks. I do love the Wagner stuff used, and will get the above mentioned album without the singing. But I would buy a proper release in a heartbeat.
Naturally I got the BD of the film. Does anyone know if it's possible to get the documentary that was made in recent years?

I like EXCALIBUR a lot, I have seen it several times in the 1980s, tough not since. The classical selections in the movie worked quite well, an I basically got acquainted with the opening chorus of Orff's Carmina Burana through the movie.
The only piece of score by Jones I remember is Igrayne's Dance, which was very good. Don't remember or know any of the rest of the score.
I'd definitely buy a well done release of this score, but I understand also if a composer just does not want certain stuff released. I'd certainly respect that.
