BUYSOUNDTRAX Records presents STAR TREK – MUSIC FROM THE VIDEO GAMES, a compilation featuring music composed by Dennis McCarthy (STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE, STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE), Kevin Kiner (STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS), Ron Jones (STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, DUCK TALES, FAMILY GUY), Kevin Manthei (JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE NEW FRONTIER, ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN), Danny Pelfrey (FELICITY, JOSEPH: KING OF DREAMS), Rod Abernethy (RAGE, CALL OF JUAREZ: GUNSLINGER), Roland Rizzo, Gregory Smith and Steve Scherer for the many video games that have carried the name STAR TREK.

STAR TREK – MUSIC FROM THE VIDEO GAMES features new recordings of music produced and arranged by Dominik Hauser from STAR TREK video games, including selections from STAR TREK: ONLINE, STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY, STAR TREK: STARFLEET COMMAND, STAR TREK: STARFLEET COMMAND III, STAR TREK: LEGACY, STAR TREK: ARMADA II, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION – BIRTH OF THE FEDERATION, STAR TREK: VOYAGER – ELITE FORCE, STAR TREK: AWAY TEAM, STAR TREK: KLINGON GUARD, STAR TREK: KLINGON, STAR TREK: BRIDGE COMMANDER and the complete score for STAR TREK: BORG.

The phenomenal success of the STAR TREK franchise has had its influence felt far beyond the reaches of television and cinema. Perhaps the greatest intersection between the STAR TREK series and movies and contemporary pop culture has been seen in the video games based on the STAR TREK universe. These games have not only borrowed concepts and characters from STAR TREK but have exteneded storylines and created brand new adventures unique to the interactive world of gaming. The first STAR TREK game was a board game produced by Ideal Toys in 1967. Any good video game arcade in 1982 counted STAR TREK: STRATEGIC OPERATIONS SIMULATOR among its inventory.

With a well-known franchise like STAR TREK, composers are usually asked to reference the iconic STAR TREK themes in some manner and some games actually use the real STAR TREK TV and movie themes under license in their soundtracks. Many times, though, it is not possible to license the actual music and video game composers are usually asked to provide music that reflects a similar musical sensibility and this presents a unique opportunity for both veteran composers and budding composers. This collection of mostly previously unreleased music selected from the STAR TREK video games has been faithfully arranged and produced by Dominik Hauser with regard to the original performances in the games themselves.

Originally from Switzerland, composer Dominik Hauser received his education at the Jazz School St. Gallen in Switzerland, earning a masters degree in music. His talent extends from composition and arrangement to instrumental performance, including bass work for jazz-funkers The Ruleless. He is the recipient of the coveted Prix Walo and has taken the stage at the Montreux Jazz Festival. In 1996 Hauser relocated to Los Angeles, where he re-entered the education arena. His studies took him to UCLA where he delved deeply into film scoring. Subsequently he took his skills to the realm of indie cinema and began composing for film. Hauser was a privileged participant in the ASCAP film-scoring workshop in 2000 and elevated to semifinalist status at the Young Film Composer Competition in 2002. Hauser has worked on films featuring such superstars as Vin Diesel (THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK) and Charlize Theron (AEON FLUX). His work involves him in a variety of projects, including cinema, theater and video games. Recently, Hauser completed arranging and orchestration on the restoration of the first Best Picture Academy Award winner WINGS for the 2012 Paramount Pictures centennial celebration.

BUYSOUNDTRAX Records presents STAR TREK – MUSIC FROM THE VIDEO GAMES, the first compilation ever of music from the STAR TREK video games.

Interesting! Will have to investigate..

Very much so! I think I'll have to get this myself, and I'll let some Trek-loving gamers I know know about it as well.

With this release, it's clear the ongoing Star Trek soundtrack project is even more all-encompassing than we could ever have hoped for not so many years ago. Astonishing to think of the stuff we've gotten already since 2009, and are continuing to get...

Very interesting compilation! I'm sure looking forward to get it, that's for sure.
And since there's (imho) a lot more music out there in these games (personally I kind of miss the main title for Generations for example) I was wondering if there's a chance for a second volume if this one goes well?

Either way, thanks a lot for doing it, much appreciated!
Samples sound great, with the exception of the last one, but maybe I'm just to used to the original soundtrack there. wink

If you are talking about the piece from STAR TREK: BORG, Both Dennis and Kevin signed off on that one and were quite happy with it.

I'm grabbing the WAV download in the morning. My plan to get it today failed for various reasons, still very grateful that BSX have listened and provided a lossless option.

I'll be very curious to see how it goes (and hopeful that people will use it)

I sitll wonder why they use wav and not FLAC through. It's a huge waste of space and time.

Internet issues on my end, was up and down all day so I didn't fancy trying to do a large download.

I basically said the same on their Facebook post for this release so didn't repeat it here, but yes I'm slightly surprised they didn't support FLAC as it means less bandwidth costs for them/Greedbag as the files are significantly smaller.

That said using WAV means that any music application can play it, without having to find a app that supports FLAC; given that iTunes doesn't and I'm fairly sure that Windows Media Player (or whatever its called now) also doesn't out of the box. Which lowers handling support messages about why the music doesn't play in a particular program smile Though it might be helpful to note that WAV means CD quality on the website.

That said, smile, if you are buying digital music elsewhere than iTunes / Amazon then you'll likely know what FLAC is.

Format support is one of two things I really liked about Bandcamp; you choose what format suits you best (they do the transcoding). The other thing I like is you can, if you want to, audition the album in full before you buy. Labels would likely hate it, Song/Universal and the like fought Apple about the 1.5 minute samples, but it does evoke a sense trust in your product though they won't get a few pennies out of your plays (I believe).

BTW Speaking of auditioning & getting paid for it, the album is on Spotify to listen to.

[Edit] Reg Spotify: its _really_ hard to see what each track is. 8 of the first 9 appear as

"Main Title (From the Original Video Game Score to..."

Not knowing the originals, the album is sounding very enjoyable. Makes me want to seek out the originals now.

Can't tell for sure if its a proper orchestra or a synth orchestra (def some synth choir in track 4, but its not a bad), some of the horns, odd string and orchestral swells make me think it synth.

Regardless a thumbs up.

Okay so bought it from the new BSX digital store.

For the most part a painless experience, though a couple of bits are unclear.

1) On the main store page http://buysoundtrax.greedbag.com it is not clear which version of the album you are putting in your basket. "Download Album - $8.99"

2) On the downloads page there are two files titled artwork.jpeg with no indication of their resolution. Suggest that you renamed them as cover600x600.jpg and cover150x150.jpg

3) This is more a Greedbag thing, but there is no indication of file size when downloading the zip file from them. Be it on the webpage or reported by their server to the web browser. At present its reporting that I've downloaded "592MB of ? (1.3MB/sec)" -- Its 688MB for those interested.

4) Minor thing but the font on the back of the digital booklet is too bold, such that there is virtually no spacing between the letters in the track titles, they kind of merge together.

5) Minor: The booklet pdf is titled "application.pdf"

6) Not so minor: By using WAV rather than FLAC/ALAC none of the files have ID tags. Not looking forward to tagging these.

I'll add more if I think of any.

- Edit

Thumbs up for getting Tobias Richter for the cover art, his Star Trek renderings & videos are amazing. I have one of his beauty shots of the Enterprise A as my desktop background.

Great stuff - first listened to the CD yesterday. Thanks BSX! Though I hadn't heard any of the source material before, I enjoyed the Star Trek Borg collection the most. A really enjoyable disc!
