... "contemporary"* big band (meaning "swing" ...

I'm glad to be the first to quote:

Cantina Band from SW.

Since Lucas told Williams to write as if aliens had discovered Benny Goodman charts under a rock on a distant planet, I'll let this one in. (Plus it's a cool addition, Loren! wink )

Such a cool thread. I always hoped to make a "modern" swing compilation / playlist. After all the info is in this thread, maybe I will do just that, if David hasn't already.

This sounds like a worthwhile, separate thread, Lex. Mine is about swing-era writing.

And Raksin said that Fielding did some wonderful things with big band ensembles in some of his 70's scores. It would be interesting to see where others spotted these ensembles in modern writing, without the swing-era style.

also 60's-70's tv scores before he went funky.
The Good Guys for instance has wonderful big band tracks.

Parts of Chicken Run (like Fight Training) has a decidedly big band style to it.

Such a ridiculously upbeat album smile

Should work everywhere except Germany (thank you GEMA)

Also the Main Title of Marc Shaiman's score to City Slickers which melds some of Morris's Blazing Saddles style scoring, cartoon Mickey Mousing and a bunch of other things.

How about The Majestic? Aside from Isham's score, there are some newly recorded numbers.

:-P Nay, nay, nay, David. You misunderstood me. Consider "modern" in my post as "movies from the last 20-30 years that use retro swing for source music, or even non-diagetic music." I wanted to build a list of the Williams' In The Mood, Shire's Mrs. Florian, etc., and this list would use the best of the examples in this thread.

So, please stop scolding me :-P, and go needle Loren for putting Fielding exmaples in the thread that use Hammonds and other electric instruments (e.g., only the last source cue on The Mechanic is really valid for this thread). jk. Most good jazz swings, but that doesn't mean the music is representative of the swing-era. :-D

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy did their swing bit on SWINGERS, complete with dancing.

"The Last of the Blonde Bombshells" (2000) was all about reuniting an all woman (+ drummer in drag) WWII swing band. There were several big band swing numbers performed, although I don't believe a soundtrack was released.

There are some fun cues from Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day that seem to fit your criteria.

It looks like ORCHESTRA WIVES and SUN VALLEY SERENADE can join the list, since they were recorded in stereo (if maybe only by happenstance...)
