Somehow I missed there was a Book 2 (3CD set) of North and South but having said that, the Screen Archives description of Book 1 (4 CD set) says "Three CDs cintain (sic) Conti’s complete original score and included is a fourth bonus disc with music of the era that was thoroughly researched and newly recorded for the show."

However, reading elsewhere it sounds like Book 2 contains additional score and that the first volume is therefore not complete as SAE's description states. Anyone able to confirm either way? If not complete, think I may have indulge in Book 2 as Book 1 is rather excellent.

Cheers.

I think Book Two refers not to a second volume of music but the second part of the miniseries.

Book I contains the music from the first part of the miniseries from 1985 - there was a second 6-episode part in 1986 (that's Varese's 3CD set) and a third one in 1994 titled "Heaven and Hell" (Jakes's N&S is a trilogy of novels).
Get Book II!...

North and South is a trilogy of books then adapted into a trilogy of TV miniseries in the years 1985, 1986, and 1994. So there might be a Book 3 score as well but I don't know.

Wow, a lot of Club titles there, I'm not sure if that's good news or bad news for a new Club release. I see the Spartacus big box has come down a bit (but maybe not enough to tempt people to buy it). I'd recomend The Hallelujah Trail, vintage Bernstein.

At first glance I thought this a posting by Varese. I never quite understand why people feel the need to act as unpaid publicity agents for record labels! A simple link would suffice.

I knew I could save a little if I held out long enough on Spartacus.

Actually I appreciated this. It brought one particular score to my attention that was on my wish list. It appears others noticed and appreciated it too. Hope this continues.

I'm glad the OP posted this, otherwise I wouldn't have known about the sale. Much appreciated!

I'd recomend The Hallelujah Trail, vintage Bernstein.

Since waiting for a "C&C" release of this fine score is apparently in vain that's the one I have finally ordered.

Thanks for the info/thread!

I'm sure nobody feels the need to do it. Nobody's being a publicity agent, just being a friendly fellow bargain hunter. And why wouldn't a link do the same thing? And isn't it just as easy to copy-and-paste some text as it is to copy-and-paste a link?

Yup, no C&C, not ever. The masters were damaged in an earthquake or something, they tell you all about it in the booklet. I think there's one cue from the original on the CD, but the album sounds great, & for me the overture alone is worth the price of the disc.

There is, but it's by another composer (I think it may have been Peter Myers) using Bill Conti's themes - and it's the only one of the trilogy that hasn't been released. It might still happen - Varese Sarabande put out The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years (Garry McDonald and Laurie Stone via Henry Mancini) BEFORE their 2-disc album for the original.

Thanks everyone who replied... the alternative I didn't even think of! I assumed N&S was a one off series and not a series of series... as it were. Book II is clearly one to get given how great Book I is.

but the album sounds great,

Yeesh, what disc were you listening to? It constantly switches from stereo to mono depending on if there's a chorus there among other issues.

If any score needs a good rerecording, it's that one.

I've just given it a quick listen on headphones & it's all stereo, the chorus sounds a bit central, but even then the orchestral accompaniment is wide stereo. I'm very happy with it. I wouldn't be interested in buying a re-recording.

'Heaven & Hell: North & South, Book III" was scored by David Bell.

I saw David Bell's North & South Book III score on cassette while at a convention once. I'd've grabbed it if it wasn't for the format.
