Just posted on La-La Land's Facebook

La-La Land Records is seeing RED...RED 2, that is. Just wanted to give you all a heads up that on July 30 we will be releasing the cd for Alan Silvestri's fantastic action packed score to RED 2, starring Bruce Willis, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mary Louise-Parker, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, and Sir Anthony Hopkins. The cd release will even feature a Bonus Track not found on the digital download.

Alan Silvestri is a popular composer around these parts. He has a new score to a summer action blockbuster coming out, which a label head has described as both "fantastic" and "action-packed".

And yet almost 48 hours later, there are 0 replies to this thread. What's the deal?

Well, there's some of us that haven't like anything he's done in many years now*.

* = amount of years may vary.

Definitely interested in the score, as Silvestri rarely disappoints. I just forgot he was scoring this because I have zero interest in the movie, so I haven't been keeping up with anything related to it.

no Z in this thread, so who cares......

wink wink wink

I like Christophe Beck too, but never saw the first film, probably
won't get around to the second, but hope Silvestri's score is good....
eh, what am I saying, I even love the hell out of the much-maligned GI JOE....

I'm definitely interested. The film looks like it could be fun (like the first), and while Silvestri's G.I. Joe was a good listen, I felt like he did an excellent job with The A-Team. So I'm happy to check out more of his action scores.

Silvestri has written some horrible action scores lately IMHO - including yes, GI Joe and The A-Team - but can still work his magic when he's given something interesting to do, so let's hope the tongue-in-cheek elements of RED 2 work in his favour.

Hey I thought The A Team kicked ass big grin GI Joe had some moments as well. I've been playing Captain America and The Avengers a lot lately ( more than I did on their original releases ) and find there's still lots of punch there... Silvestri still packs a punch.

And yeah am looking forward to Red 2. The score. The movie... ummm, no.

Yeah, The A-Team (if only it had used the Mike Post/Pete Carpenter theme a little more), G.I. Joe, The Avengers and especially Captain America were terrifically fun. Silvestri's really been on a roll these last few years turning out rollicking, larger-than-life action scores. Great stuff.

Sivestri's a "blind buy" for me.
One of the very best composers when it comes to action scoring IMHO.
Flying a Tank from The A-Team is one of my favorite tracks for an action scene from recent years.
On the other hand, I'd love to hear some more intimate scores in the wake of Forrest Gump or Contact from the composer. Zemecki's Flight didn't get a proper release, didn't it?

The complete score to Flight is only 23 minutes

Paired with the equally short score for Cast Away this would make for a fine album I guess.

Yeah, Flying a Tank is one hell of a track, and I agree, one of my absolute favorites in recent years. Listening to the Red 2 samples, although they sound great to me, this score won't be very popular here I fear - heavy on electronic accents and a groove/ Bourne feel. But it's a must have for me.

And yes, it'd be nice to hear a more intimate score from Silvestri again - a Flight / Cast Away release would be fine. It was basically repeats & slight variations of one theme, but Cast Away was just heartbreakingly lovely

For me Silvestri is one of those composers who - like Goldsmith or Arnold - have a great sense of balance. If he uses electronics (Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life ) or electric guitars ( Eraser ) it does never drown the orchestra nor do these elements take over.

One more before the weekend is over... Synchrotones reviews "Red 2" by Alan Silvestri. Read all about it (or as much as I could be bothered to write about it) at:

Thanks,

G.I. Joe and The Avengers (I almost wrote Team America lol) are great fun and Silvestri has become my go-to composer for action scores and he is just so good at doing the orchestra meets electronics/MV meld. I just can't get enough of them. As extensive as the album versions are, there is even more goodness left off from them and I would welcome C&C releases some day (especially Avengers has a secondary theme that is not featured on the intrada but heavily in the score). Captain America is also fun, A-Team for some reason doesn't strike a chord with me (I had the same problem with Eraser), I think a matter of themes not grabbing me.

I can't wait to hear what Silvestri has come up with for the Red sequel and can't wait to see it as I discovered the first one late in the game and enjoyed it a lot!

P.S. regarding Silvestri's synths, some of his 80s synth scores suffer from synths that sound terribly outdated even for that period, I do feel that in this age, he finally has evolved to synth and beats that sound as good as the 90s, he's slowly getting there! wink

I saw RED 2 a few days ago. I liked Silvestri's propulsive main theme, but the rest of the score didn't make much of an impression. Of course that's my take on 75% of the scores I hear today. I'll have to listen to some more samples before I decide on a purchase.

Surprisingly, I didn't care much for this score. I really like Silvestri in heavy electronics mode like The A-Team or G.I. Joe but this one sort of lacked heart and soul, it just felt by-the-numbers with a few quotes from Beck's original score.

Silvestri is hit-or-miss with me these days.

Francis, funny you say that about Silvestri and synths now-and-then. I do think he is very capable of writing terrific synth-heavy scores, but I was shocked at how much I felt the synth drums were outdated and amateurish sounding, particularly in the main title. I also felt there was a similar dated quality in the synth drums from The Avengers. He can execute some cutting-edge sounds but the synth drums in Red 2 and The Avengers don't even come close and are woefully out of date. To my ears!

On a whim, decided I will re-visit and re-evaluate this score in a few days. Dug up this old thread to see what I wrote about the score awhile back; I remember I didn't care for it when I first heard it. I remember being surprisingly underwhelmed and disappointed by the score. As I read my comments above from over two years ago, I'm very curious if my opinion will change as I take another listen to the score two years later. I will report back as soon as I've had a chance to reappraise this score! Anyone care to share their thoughts on this score? Ever give it much thought or much play?
