Ridley Scott's sword and sandals 2000 epic Gladiator will be presented live in concert for the first time in the UK as Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard’s sweeping score is brought to life by the Philharmonia Orchestra and Philharmonia Chorus conducted by Justin Freer.
Are they going to show GLADIATOR as a silent movie without dialogue and sound f/x? How else would it work?

As a frequent visitor to the RAH I must say that said packages and dining facilities should be avoided. There are enough good restaurants in South Kensington, and the beer is much cheaper next door at the Imperial College Pub!

I don't get this new trend AT ALL.
The Abrams STAR TREK films have just sold out similar concerts in the UK, but as Thor states, the music played with the film UP FRONT with toned down dialogue and sound FX seems a bit pointless to me.

I shan't be attending. I can't see the point of screening movies with all their sounds and an orchestra accompanying the movie live. I'm all for music concerts, but not movies. I watch movies at home.
I once went to one of these, LOTR film & Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra. Unfortunately I was unaware that all the sounds effect would be heard (and loud), as it wasn't really advertised as such. So when the film started, I was immensly disappointed. That was one of the angriest moments of this decade. I would have left righ away, but I was sitting in the middle of the row, so I felt I shouldn't bother so many folks with my own feelings. I left during intermission, got home, poured four fingers of vodka and listened to Morricone's Sinfonia Per Baarìa and Goldenthal's Toccata And Dreamscapes, possibly two of my all-time favourite longer pieces of music.
In addition to being disappointed by the inclusion of sound effects, I was avoiding looking at the screen, so I was watching the orchestra. Some players seemed really bored at parts. I haven't been to any concerts of 'actual' orchestral music (classical / modern etc.) so I don't know how the instrumentalists act when they're not performing. Although there is much music in LOTR, there still are moments when the orchestra has absolutely nothing to do. So these performers were leaning on their instruments and occasionally chatting with the player next to them. I guess that's what an orchestra does when they're bored as they're not playing. But that's why the orchestra should be in a pit rather than facing the audience, as they were in this occasion.
I digressed much. Back on point, can a live orchestra even perform the Gladiator score? How much of the music heard in film and album is sampled or computerly enhanced and overlayed?
How much I dig this new trend of scores being performed with a movie screening with once again the music having to compete againts sound effects can be seen on the face of me on the picture of my avatar.
