It was probably 1953 British film GENEVIEVE I expect. wink

Truthfully I don't know, though I would say bigger doesn't always sound bigger.

I seem to remember reading that Elfman's score for SLEEPY HOLLOW employed one of the largest orchestras in film history. But I'm fussy on the details.

I remembering tallying the number of players on Arnold's GODZILLA score at over 150 (90 string players!), and that DIDN'T include the choir...

I don't know the answer, all I would say is this: don't go rushing to the AFM musicians lists in the booklets to find out because, of course, there's no guarantee all the players listed were in the orchestra at the same time.

Some of them may have played on some sessions while others played on other sessions.

I'm not sure you can entirely tell by listening either, because (I think) the engineering, mixing and mastering could make an orchestra seem bigger or smaller than it is.

Didnt BTTF have the biggest orchestra up to that point? I mean sounds unlikely, but...

I have no idea if it is considered as a big orchestra but there are 200 musicians mentioned by their name in the booklet of Carter Burwell`s Conspiracy Theory.

If it's just an orchestra, and no choir, then that's really bog. But like was mentioned above. These 200 might not have all played on the same sessions on the same time.
