I am wondering why some people order lots of CDs at one time. Which of the following applies to you?

a. You have a good job, extra money to spend.
b. You want to support the labels. You take months to pay it off on credit cards, but you know you did your part.
c. You are addicted to this stuff. Money be damned.
d. You go to buy one and then you think, "What the heck, why not 2?" The next thing you know, you have ordered 10 items.
e. other

For me, its all of the above. But mostly C. I am a film score addict. Is there a Film Score Anonymous? lol

From amazon with postage at a quid 26, it doesn't matter if it's one or ten, but from the likes of
SAE or Intrada, it makes sense to order 3 or 4 titles to crunch the postal charges.

I tend to wait 3-5 months between orders (with the exception being the rare title that'll sell out in a few days, or one that LLL or BSX offers autographed if you're among the first X number of buyers).

Although the main reason I can buy so many soundtrack albums is A, the primary reason I prefer to wait and get a few months worth of releases in a single order is to save on the shipping costs. While I'm in Canada and don't face as high a shipping burden as many others who are further out, paying about $31 for a hypothetical shipment of fifteen 2CD albums (based on Intrada's shipping prices) is a heck of a cheaper than what I'd pay if I only ordered one or two albums at a time.

With postage costs having gone up stupidly high, i'm actually buying less than i have in previous years. GNP, for instance, wanting $14 to post a $20 CD, which is too much. In that case i ordered ST:I and MotU together from SAE, for less postage costs ($12.50)

Normally i clump orders to 2CDs to minimize chances of customs stopping it & adding fees. Sometimes when a particular deal comes up i order lots that I've been meaning to (like a BSX order i did recently).

Speaking of BSX... I did the same thing almost two weeks ago, but unfortunatelly I have no back information if my order has been sent, no online update whatsoever, nor I have a reply to any of the 4 (!!) emails I have sent to them.

Dear tarasis, could you please share your experience with your BSX orders, did you have any communication problems with them as I have now, or maybe some delays?? Thank you in advance.

My answer is C

I also fear that if I do not buy certain albums now they will go out of print and thenI will have to pay and arm and a leg for a cd.

I know two of the times that I ordered a lot were when there was a great deal. FSM was giving free copies of CDs like Home From the Hill and Lassie if you ordered $100 worth or something like that. That is when I bought $200 worth to get 4 free CDs. Among the $200 I spent was $120 for the Superman Box set.

Also, I have ordered $100 of stuff from BSX just to get the free bonus CD. I would do that more often if they would ever offer something than Christopher Young stuff. I am not into him.

c. You are addicted to this stuff. Money be damned.
d. You go to buy one and then you think, "What the heck, why not 2?"

These two are factors that warrant more discussion around these parts. I myself have gotten into phases of rampant addictive collecting from time to time and it's not something I'm proud of. I'll convince myself to buy CDs that are heavily discussed on boards even though I've not heard of the score before or am not particularly enamored with a particular composer (yet convince myself that if others are raving it *must* be good). I have a couple of dozen CDs sitting on my shelf that I never spin and am slowly trading away.

I also find that when I'm in that kind of mindset, I never look at the wealth of CDs that I already have (which would last me weeks if I were to play them all back-to-back) but constantly focus on what I don't have, or what's coming next.

I do have to admit that the flooding of the market, so to speak, has helped me to reduce this behaviour somewhat as there's fewer extremely quick sell outs and "buy it now or it's gone" impulse buys. But, on the other hand, this board in particular doesn't help things with its increasing tendency to orient itself towards the "what's coming out next / gotta collect it all" mentality. When I first came here, well over a decade ago, the floodgates hadn't opened for the labels and it was more healthy and interesting discussion about the art of film music itself rather than bottlecap collecting.

I suspect there's many here, whether they admit it or not, that collect addictively and I don't think this board helps that behaviour a lot.... sometimes it's like alcoholics running the liquor store; instead of discussing the virtues of this wine or that, it's all about when the next shipment will arrive. Thoughts?

Chris.

b. You want to support the labels. You take months to pay it off on credit cards, but you know you did your part.

Regardless of the sentiment in the first sentence, do you expect anyone would actually admit to this? I really hope nobody is in that position, but you never know.

B&R I had no problems the 2-3 of times I've ordered from them. I order, get the email, get a follow up email with 24 hours saying it won't ship for 4-7 days and then a couple of weeks later it arrived.

I would really hope that people aren't getting themselves into massive debt simply for the sake of supporting the labels. Yes, it's important to support the labels (as opposed to say going for digital downloads, or simply pirating the music) but at the end of the day, this stuff is for entertainment. You gotta take care of the essentials of life first.

P.S. I'm not slamming the labels... I love you guys, but there's a limit to what any one person can spend on film scores!

Chris.

Well, actually none of the above. first off, I do live in Sweden so when I order from SAE it makes no sense for me to order one or two titles at each time.

The 2nd reason is the most important reason and that is just because of the (believe it or not) lack of money. Yes you read correctly. You see I can spend up to about 1000 SEK each time I make an order and that is however not that often.

Some CDs are insanely cheap. So why not order many at one time?

My sole and simple reason for ordering a bunch of CDs at the same time is exclusively to save on shipping – the two German dealers I usually order from offer free shipping from an order total of 100€.

Keep in mind I know many buy a lot from a specific retailer like SAE or The Movie Music Store etc. to save on shipping. That might also be a reason as well on top of your others smile

I think it all depends on each person, we don't all fit into one category I would imagine.

That's the whole point of having a multiple choice question.
