How'd it play for you?

Think it'd work for a "style as substance" type who enjoys the craft, suspense and maniacal intensity of Hooper's original chainsaw, its completely gonzo--and whip smart--sequel, Sam Raimi's own horror entries?

DEAD '13 seems to have a polarizing effect on people; I have seen it panned...and praised intelligently: Inspired, nasty grue and grotesquery for some...merely relentless excreta to others.

Tempted to gamble with a blind buy, hoping it's my kind of clever assault on the senses and not the equivalent of someone putting a pail over my head, drizzling it with entrails and hitting it, ceaselessly, with a rubber mallet.

Looks like a female protagonist this time? Interesting. 'Buffy' guy here...

Thanks for your input (and kindly hold any spoilers)!

Saw Evil Dead today and it definitely had me turn away on a couple of occasions, but I can't help but feel that I wanted to laugh as much as I wanted to be shocked by this movie; Which is basically my main criticism of this remake. By taking away the Campbell character with his college smarts to react and mouth off to the demons, the demons themselves feel lifeless (pardon the pun) and I feel like I'm just watching a torture porn in an updated Evil Dead setting going through the motions. On its own it's still an ok horror film, I did enjoy the necronomicon bits, the demon sequences and definitely Baños' score which helps the movie a ton, but for me "Drag me to Hell" was more "Evil Dead" than this "Evil Dead". They should have revived lady Ganush for this one. wink

I still stand by that first impression, despite some genuinely gruesome sequences, I think they played it too 'safe' in the comedy department which is what you expect being more present going into an evil dead move. Evil should be more fun really wink

Just saw it the other day after an Evil Dead trilogy rewatch. Didn't care for it. The original was no masterpiece. Dull characters, pretty straightforward plot. Where it succeeded -- and in spades -- was in putting its extremely modest budget onscreen. It worked because of Raimi's crazy energy and visual inventiveness. In later installments what kept things afloat were Raimi's increasing manic kinetic energy, and Bruce Campbell's (unexpected, based on the first film) charisma and comic presence.

Sadly, one thing the remake is really lacking is that life. It looks good, but it's tedious. It has no energy. The deadites/demons aren't as crazy/creepy as they used to be; in this vision, they're basically zombies who talk. In this version, the book of the dead is less an evil artifact than a demon playbook, spelling out exactly what's going to happen and how to stop it, and helpfully annotated by previous victims(?) with marginalia and transliterations into English. This one has tons of blood, but the blood has little effect, either comic or horrific. The film is a wasted opportunity. They could basically have gone one (or both) of two directions: either a horrific remake of the original, or some kind of interesting expansion of the Evil Dead "mythology". Instead they did neither, and crafted a standard cabin-in-the-woods affair that had nothing new to say about the subject matter and nothing interesting to offer viewers.

Baños' score was pretty good, though.

I'm a huge Evil Dead fan - saw the original in the theaters on its release, met Raimi and Campbell at a film festival for ED2 - enjoyed the third -

I enjoyed the new one - it was never going to be as fun or exciting at the original - but I did like the angle that this has happened before, and will happen again at this cabin - so I got a less remake and more continuation of the story vibe - plus I loved the Banos score - is it a good movie? I don't know, but I enjoyed watching it - watch the entire credit sequence!

Thanks for all the feedback.

Sounds like tedium may be the greatest peril with this one. If this Cabin In The Woods isn't furnished with enough imagination, wit, and the kind of mad invention a film like this needs--or at least a guffawing moose head--we're left with another lesson in the boring beauty of reliably delivered--projectile vomited?--slick...or sick production values.

Still not sure whether I'll pony up for the Blu. I'm prepared to add lotsa beer--party on, Deadite Wayne/Garth, drown sorrows in a drink-on-dismemberment binge?--and have that Ebay listing ready to go.

You could always just rent it first. My enthusiasm wasn't high enough to catch it in theaters, but I may still rent it just out of morbid curiosity. I'm not a die hard hater of remakes (I've seen some I thought outshone the originals), but most horror remakes in recent years haven't been very good, IMO, so this will definitely be a rental. I almost never blind-buy movies or soundtracks anymore.

Pulling the trigger on a pay-per-view; SD and cropped, but a safe compromise to check out the sensibility. The option to go Blu remains, of course. Will report back...

Well, I enjoyed it (vague plot details follow). I remember Raimi's Evil Dead II much better than his original, so maybe that was a factor in the Alvarez feeling grittier, more naturalistic...as though some of the comic book spooky had been deliberately scaled back, at least in the early going. Overall, that made for a feeling of diabolical nasty that ably suspended disbelief; it was pretty disturbing. Those spasmodic Deadites with their killing machine eyes... Jane Levy does good demon. Her Devil Does The Dew!

Nice buildup; I especially liked the unveiling of the book (barbed wire means you've got a page turner on your hands). Some of the attacks could've been more imaginative, as with the nail gun "squall"--too goofball for the tone?--and the by the numbers cellar ambush.

I thought it might've benefited from a bit longer running time, another narrative twist, one more well engineered set piece which would lead up to that truly epic finale that was simply beautiful: One big, operatic, hellish vision. Maybe one of the Top Ten horror catharses of all time!

Looking foward to the sequel I hope we get; this one seems to have done well enough...

I think the plan (or at least the hope) is for Álvarez to make a sequel to this film starring Levy, and for Raimi to make Army of Darkness 2, and then to have one final film bringing it all together. But Bruce Campbell is on record calling that a lot of "bold talk" and stating that while Raimi keeps talking about these possibilities, nothing's actually moving forward.

That said, the movie certainly did well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel so we'll probably get one, even if we don't ever get a whole big crossover situation.

That would be a blast. I would love to see Levy get her own Dead Cycle; If the humor is re-introduced, I see Ash and Mia eventually meeting up, fitting each other's stump with a weapons upgrage. There's a must-see buddy picture in there maybe Raimi himself could do justice.
