Hmmm, I'd love to see GOLDFINGER with all the "boring talky bits" removed, CGI enhanced action sequences inserted and a Hans Zimmer score to make the film more contemporary.

I'm just kidding of course, but it's only a matter of time before some bright spark gets the idea of re-editing, CGI-ing and re-scoring old movies to make them — ahem — "better" to today's young audience.

I'm just kidding of course, but it's only a matter of time before some bright spark gets the idea of re-editing, CGI-ing and re-scoring old movies to make them — ahem — "better" to today's young audience. Well, George Lucas already did that to Star Wars... Spielberg to ET... With less than satisfactory results... other films have been revised by their directors several years after their releases (Alien, Star Trek, Blade Runer). I'm generally against this kind of changes, except some minor corrections done by the directors (repairing the hole in the finale of Aliens, reducing mate lines, removing visible wires, reediting the movie as originally intended by the director - again Aliens and Blade Runner). I'd love to see, however some rejected/modified scores reedited into their films (Alien, Troy, King Kong 2005, the original edit of Wolfen) Now it seems the trend is unnecerally converting to 3d movies that weren't originally designed to be viewd in the format- Jurassic Park, I Robot,... Back to the topic, I don't think modern scores would be adequate to older movies, it would be jarring as the movie would remain with its' older special effects, editing, etc. There are some scores I dislike that I'd have preferred if they had been discarted and replaced at the time the movies were produced (For Your Eyes Only, Ladyhawke and, Romancing The Stone), but that is just a "what if" thinking. One thing I'd like however was if they could re-score some movies rerecording their own scores in the case of some older scores that do not sound very good due to problems related to their age/recording. A modern recording of Star Wars or Jaws done by Williams, or a newer recording of Psycho or Vertigo...

LADYHAWKE comes to mind. I think it's a solid 80s fantasy flick. But the score really bugs me. In fact, I tried to isolate just the dialogue in order to temp the movie with Poledouris' Flesh and Blood. Unfortunately I was not successful. You know, they were considering a really good composer for that film: Gerard Schurmann

I wish Elmer Bernstein had scored Alien. Other than some interesting textures, I find Goldsmith's score very workmanlike (he hated the film, and it shows). Plus Bernstein had never done a sci-fi movie so he would have come the genre fresh. Bernstein should also have scored either Live And Let Die, For Your Eyes Only or Never Say Never. But I guess Gold was the closest we ever got to hearing a Bernstein 007 score. I'd also have loved to have heard Henry Mancini score take a crack at a Bond film. He was the obvious choice to do one. It's odd that it never happened.

If this thread takes off i predict nothing but heartache. That jerry shoulda dun this score, that ennio shoulda dun that score, that williams shouldv also dun these scores, oh no, im quite happy with henrys original score, or could he have done a better score than norths - woulda shoulda coulda! What does it matter, we got what we got. Enjoy everything for what it is.

The only reason old movies are not re-edited for contemporary audiences is because of rights ownership and royalties. Easier to make your own bad, noisy, CGI-ed Goldfinger. Still, there are edited-for-broadcast-TV versions for your 'enjoyment'.
