John Carpenter's Tentacular Spectacular, The Thing, helped me get over the free shipping hump at Amazon for a hair over seven bucks (Blu-ray). So how's this Em Effer wake up in Hi Def after all these years? [I was a little slow on the pickup, maybe because I owned several pounds of SD 'Thing.' So when it came to the Blu, I was all...some Things can wait...for a seven dollar special. Well, that day has come...] Anticipating modest gains in picture quality for HD, though now I'm reading Universal ran amok with digital noise reduction, smudging out the fine detailing in the snow and slime. A treatment they apparently did not subject their earlier, HD DVD edition to... Well, how bad is it? Merely within shouting distance of up-scaled SD? Or did Universal's digital scrubbing stop within an inch of The Thing's wriggling life? I hope there's still an HD glint in the eye of ol' "Split-face." Remember him? He was the mess--"Is that a man in there...or somethin'?"--from the Norwegian camp that Mac brought back for show and tell. Fingers crossed this is a quality presentation for a film that deserves it. --Coop
