I can't find dougs comments over at intrada on this score.

But let me tell you. the bernstein score was recorded on three channel stereo.
Sony has been searching for ALL of this score for the past four years.

It is all in stereo, true stereo, on the new criterion dvd.

Perhaps Intrada started a project some time ago, spending money to clean up the acetates ( which, as far as I know, are not complete) and now does not want to admit that the stereo mags exist.

here's the INTRADA link again: http://www.intrada.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5709

Joe, Doug says the Criterion 5.1 was a rearrangement of the MONO Music & Effects tracks -- and are not TRUE stereo. Likewise, the acetates were MONO. He also says the latter are complete, not cut as you suggest. Perhaps like SPARTACUS, we will be lucky to get that.

Did I miss something? You are all talking like the release is imminent but the Intrada article about the source material being available was written in 2007.

I couldnt find any mention of the acetates being around since 2007, but Doug does say the score will be released at some point:
"So, yes, this masterpiece of film scoring is finally coming to you at last, complete, in mono audio from discs, with all of the string harmonics and delicate colors playing crisply against the most powerful orchestral crescendos you could ever hope to hear... everything from that lonely opening solo French horn to that final thundering full orchestral coda."

I did some further checking.

One - the criterion IS rechanneled from mono music and effects - so well done, it fooled me into thinking they used the real stereo. Sony HAS found around half of the score in true stereo, and is still looking.

By the way, there is a 20 minute suite from OTW in stereo with Bernstein conducting the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra attached as filler in a re-recording of West Side Story released in the mid-80's. This was the period of time that a number of Broadway shows were re-recorded using noted opera singers. This one included the miscasting of Jose Carreras as Tony (should Tony actually have a stronger Spanish accent than Maria???).

You act as if that's the only time it's been recorded. It isn't. Even Bernstein recorded another one earlier on Sony and it's been recorded probably at least three other times as well.

I like to think Fred was just bumping up the thread to keep it on the radar wink

It will be one of the great film score releases when it hits. Can't wait.

Is the LP a good representation? I mean, if I like the LP, I will probably like the full score?
